scott
Outkast and NWA yeah they certainly sum up rock and roll now don't they?
In heaven
I love The Beatles to death but best rock band? The best band yes, best rock band no. Helter Skelter is as close as they come to rocking or maybe Revolution.
scott
What about "Twist and Shout"?

In heaven
I think NWA could have elements of rock maybe in what they are saying not playing. Jello Biafra the singer from the Dead Kennedys said they were a great punk rock band.
In heaven
But do you think those Beatles songs beat out the Rolling Stones Street Fighting Man(in consideration to rock).
scott
Ehhh, whatever I'm just happy that they at least mentioned one of my personal favorites, even though they're not ranked too high, the great and wonderful R.E.M!!! They're very underrated in my opinion.
scott
Yes yes I do believe that "Twist and Shout" trumps everything
In heaven
Where is The Pretty Things, MC5 and 13th Floor Elevators? I hate lists because then people are gonna assume that this are the best rock bands which is far from true.
In heaven
REM underrated I dont even know if they should be in this catagory. I think they are great dont get me wrong. Underrated they are above Black Sabbath, The Who, Husker Du and Bad Brains in a rock catagory now if this was just a band catagory maybe but rock? Tenacious_Peaches
If they had even said 50 greatest bands I wouldn't have been quite so offended. But as much as I love Public Enemy (and believe me, I do), they are not rock. The list still wouldn't have been good IMHO, but at least it wouldn't have narrowed it down to a specific genre. And yes, Scott, I do rock it Bueller-style, biatch!
MindCrime
Half of this list is a joke anyways, I've always hated Spin's commentary & list ranking, but this one tops it. I don't see how Korn is better than Pink Floyd, Ramones more revolutionary than Led Zeppelin?, or Rage higher than The Who? I don't see how Fugazi or Pavement makes the cut, the same with Bad Brains. Who has heard of Fela Kuti? Who the hell remembers Blondie? Iggy Pop & the Stooges didn't do enough for the top 20, CCR would've been much better up there. Where is Bob Dylan, Elvis, James Brown, Eric Clapton, The Doors, Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha, Fleetwood Mac, Buddy Holly, Simon & Garfunkel, B.B. King, Smokey Robinson, etc etc.. it goes on & on. Obviously when they said "All-Time" what they really meant was last 30 years or so.
Batman
This is a pretty funny list. Mindcrime, you said it was a joke. Did you mean a joke like "woah, these people don't know what they are talking about or" "Just kidding!" either way, top complaints. Ramones #2? Radiohead is better than The Experience? Outkast and Korn higher than Floyd? R.E.M? Black Sabbath should have been way higher. After reading this, I somehow gained more respect for Rolling Stone! Did you mean a joke like "woah, these people don't know what they are talking about or" "Just kidding!" Batman, I meant it was a joke as in SPIN doesn't know what they're talking about, they never do. I used to buy their magazine, because I thought it was on the edge of current artists (which at the time were more decent) but they're so far-fetched from anything by these original artists, that they wouldn't know good music if a guitar got shoved up their @$$. They did good with mentioning Kraftwerk though, who were an original techno/electronica band of the 70's.
