c_s_1987
[big]THE SECOND SONGFACTORS' CHOICE ULTIMATE TOP TEN - ROUND 5[/big] - No nominations are required, as the songs have been selected from our 25 top tens. - Voting rules will be exactly the same as the normal top tens - rank your favourite songs in the list from 1-10, and 10 points will be given to your number 1 song, 9 for number 2 etc. - We have decided to restrict eligibility to vote to only those people who have nominated or voted in at least one of our Top Tens. We think that's fair ! - We realised it would be ridiculous to expect people to come up with a top ten from all 250 songs, so I have seeded the songs and split them into fair groups. - The results will be announced in about a week from the start date of this thread. - This is Group 5 of 5, and this group contains 50 songs. I will then combine the five top tens together to form a group, and then we will vote on these songs to form the Ultimate Top Ten. Group 5: A Day In The Life - The Beatles (1967) All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix (1968) All I Have To Do Is Dream - The Everly Brothers (1958) America - Simon & Garfunkel (1968) Are You Lonesome Tonight - Elvis Presley (1960) Bang & Blame - R.E.M. OLD 55
Ah, Jenny and bluesboy. We are the only ones so far who appreciate the beautiful "Unchained Melody". It was written for a 1954 movie about a prisoner in a minimum secutity jail, thus the "Unchained", and had 3 different versions simultaneously in the U.S. Top Ten in 1955, one of them at #1. Also another cover version by a U.K. singer topped their Charts. The most famous cover is of course this one by the Righteous Brothers (really Bobby Hatfield solo - I don't think Bill Medley sang a note on it) which was U.S. #4 in 1965. A quarter of a century later it topped Charts again around the world after being used in the movie "Ghost". One of the most beautiful songs ever written. I've been curious about the rest of Alex North's stuff.
OLD 55
I didn't know much about him, until I just looked up Wikipedia. He was responsible for many Movie scores, and received 15 Academy Award nominations (unsuccessfully), but he did receive the "Lifetime Achievement Academy Award". Hy Zaret wrote the great lyrics. Probably, as you say, everyone's heard it a lot, and unfortunately, familiararity does breed contempt - or indifference anyway.
