Elvish
Not altogether different, but different for Music of Choice How would y'all feel about taking a page from Old 55's book and only nominating albums from artists who have never been in a Music of Choice list? Jenny
I can't believe this one hasn't made it yet: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road- Elton John (1973) Track listing: 1. Funeral for a friend (Love Lies Bleeding) 2. Candle in The Wind 3. Bennie and The Jets 4. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 5. This Song Has No Title 6. Grey Seal 7. Jamaica Jerk-off 8. I've seen that movie too 9. Sweet painted lady 10. The ballad of Danny Bailey 11. Dirty Little Girl 12. All the girls love Alice 13. Your sister can't twist (but she can rock 'n' roll) 14. Saturday night's alright for fighting 15. Roy Rogers 16. Social Disease 17. Harmony This album is considered a landmark in Elton John's and his fellow songwriter Bernie Taupin's career. Just look at the track listing and there's sure to be at least one or two songs you like. My favorites are "Saturday Night's alright for fighting", "Harmony" and the title song. What can I say? Simply a masterpiece. Edited February 27, 2007 by Guest Can't get the image to work
Farin
a renomination from me: Pearl Jam ~ Binaural (2000) Track listing 1. "Breakerfall" (Vedder) – 2:19 2. "Gods' Dice" (Ament) – 2:26 3. "Evacuation" (Cameron, Vedder) – 2:56 4. "Light Years" (Gossard, McCready, Vedder) – 5:06 5. "Nothing As It Seems" (Ament) – 5:22 6. "Thin Air" (Gossard) – 3:32 7. "Insignificance" (Vedder) – 4:28 8. "Of the Girl" (Gossard) – 5:07 9. "Grievance" (Vedder) – 3:14 10. "Rival" (Gossard) – 3:38 11. "Sleight of Hand" (Ament, Vedder) – 4:47 12. "Soon Forget" (Vedder) – 1:46 13. "Parting Ways" (Vedder) – 7:17 * Contains the hidden track "Writer's Block" If anything, Pearl Jam was even more in the wilderness -- at least as far as the mainstream was concerned -- at the beginning of 2000 than they were in the second half of the '90s. Even with "Last Kiss," their first big hit single since Ten, under their belts, they were an anomaly on the pop and rock scenes. They were the only one of their old grunge colleagues still standing intact, and they were genuinely alone. No peers, and too sincere to even consider fitting into a pop scene dominated by 'N Sync on one side and Limp Bizkit on the other. Not surprisingly, they chose to persevere, ignoring trends, completely in favor of being a classicist rock band. This should come as no surprise, since that's what they've done since No Code and, perhaps, Vitalogy, but the real surprise about their sixth studio album Binaural is that it finds the group roaring back to life without dramatically changing the direction they followed on No Code and Yield. Maybe the addition of a new drummer, former Soundgarden member Matt Cameron, has kicked the band to life, but that unfairly dismisses Jack Irons' worthy contributions. Instead, the difference is focus -- though Pearl Jam is trying a lot of different styles, certainly more so than on Yield, they pull it all off better. The songs are sharper, the production is layered, and the performances are as compassionate as ever, resulting in their finest album since Vitalogy. Thin Air (Bridge School Benefit 2006) Nothing as it Seems (Rock Am Ring 2000) Parting Ways (Seattle 2000) Light Years (Katowice) Grievance (at David Letterman)

Tenacious_Peaches
review from allmusic As anyone who witnessed their legendary shorts on HBO will attest, Tenacious D is indeed the greatest band on earth. Bad D is still better than the Beatles and good D is transcendent. Even so, Tenacious D's debut album will likely kick fans on their asses because the D is no longer just about JB and KG. They're even ready to be more than a power trio — they're ready to be backed by a full band, complete with Dave Grohl on drums and the Dust Brothers behind the boards. After years of hearing them as an acoustic heavy metal duo, that's a real shock, but they've also overhauled their repertoire, reworking and retitling several songs and leaving many tunes behind. Most regrettably, there is no "History of Tenacious D," even if it is quoted in the liner notes, but there's also no "Rocketsauce," no "Kyle Took a Bullet for Me," no "Sasquatch," no "Cosmic Shame," no "Special Things," and no "Jesus Ranch." "You Broke the Rules" becomes "Karate," "Song of Exultant Joy" is "Kyle Quit the Band," "Sex Supreme" becomes "Double Team," "The Best Song in the World" becomes "Tribute," lacking many of the "Stairway to Heaven" allusions in this version, and so on and so forth (elements of their opening theme are incorporated into "Kielbasa," thankfully). Furthermore, the dynamic has shifted drastically because the group no longer sounds like maniacal misfits who've conquered the worlds in their own minds playing to an audience who just hasn't caught up yet. Here, they sound like victors who've had their delusions of grandeur come real (which is true when you think about it — those shorts might not have done much on HBO, but videotapes passed through a lot of hands on the underground video railroad). This is a bigger change than you might think, and while the acoustic D sounds better, weirder, and purer, this still is a hell of a record, particularly because it rocks so damn hard. The worst thing about it are the sketches, which may be funny, but not nearly as funny as the plots that tied the shows together (nothing as funny as asides from the show, like "circle church," either) or the live routines; they tend to distract from the music. And the music is indeed what matters, since no matter how silly and gleefully profane this can be, Tenacious D rules because the music is terrific. The tunes have hooks, Kage and Jables harmonize well, and the cheerfully demented worldview is intoxicating, since their self-belief and self-referential world is delightfully absurd and warm (think about it — the sex songs may be vulgar and may be about their prowess, but their prowess is about making those backstage Betties feel good). Sure, some listeners may chuckle because this all comes from two large, cute, 30-something slackers, but they're missing the inspirado behind this record — Tenacious D certainly know they're funny, but that doesn't erase the fact that they rock so hard. They came to kick your ass and rock your socks off, and that is a very special thing. 1. Kielbasa 2. One Note Song 3. Tribute 4. Wonderboy 5. Hard F***ing 6. F*** Her Gently 7. Explosivo 8. Dio 9. Inward Singing 10. Kyle Quit The Band 11. The Road 12. C**k Pushups 13. Lee 14. Friendship Test 15. Friendship 16. Karate Schnitzel 17. Karate 18. Rock Your Socks 19. Drive-Thru 20. Double Team 21. City Hall This is a spectacular album from start to finish. I can't pick my favorites, but here are a few highlights: Tribute - This song is an epic journey in which two simple, portly men take on Satan and win. It is a triumph of goofy over evil. Satan tells the duo they can keep their souls if they play him the greatest song ever. Although they never come right out and say it, they slay Satan with a rocking version of "Stairway to Heaven". The song "Tribute" is simply that...a tribute to the greatest song in the world. In one 4 minute song, you've got humor, you've got hard rocking, you've got drama, and you've got the triumph of the ages. What more can you people expect out of a song? Wonderboy - Another otherworldly journey for our two heroes, aka Wonderboy and Young Nastyman. Their powers are discussed (such as the power to kill a yak from 200 yards away and levitation, holmes) and they eventually team up to become the D. Dio - only the D can treat a subject such as the decline of Ronnie James Dio's backsliding career with reverence while pleading with him to stop singing. They want him to pass his torch onto the D. "Your sauce will mix with ours, and we'll make a good goulash, baby." Kyle Quit the Band - a testament to the sacred bond between Jack and Kyle. They had a falling out, but of course they get back together. "Couldn't split up Kato and Nash. That's true. Couldn't split up Tango and Cash. That's also true." Rock Your Socks Off - Okay, I said I didn't have a favorite song, but this is way up there on my list. It starts out with the ultimate lyric..."It doesn't matter if it is good, it only matters if it rocks." The song then goes into a classical guitar solo by Kyle, followed by a spoken word monologue by Jack about how to become a bona fide rock god. MindCrime
BOSTON - Boston 1 "More Than a Feeling" – 4:46 2 "Peace of Mind" – 5:02 3 "Foreplay/Long Time" – 7:47 4 "Rock and Roll Band" – 3:00 5 "Smokin'" (Bradley Delp, Scholz) – 4:20 6 "Hitch a Ride" – 4:13 7 "Something About You" – 3:48 8 "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" (Delp) – 4:43 The resulting album, Boston, was an enormous success and helped revive the popularity of mainstream rock at a time when punk and disco were becoming more popular. It ranks as the best selling debut album in USA history , with over 17 million copies sold Boston's first, eponymous album coverDuring the summer of 1976 Boston would get great publicity when they toured with Black Sabbath and Moxy throughout Texas; after which they got a loyal fan base in Texas. The band then embarked on a worldwide tour to support the new album. This helped establish Boston as one of rock's top acts within a short time. Tensions later developed between Epic, which wanted a big follow up album to capitalize on the success of Boston and Scholz, who wanted to be painstaking in the recording process. Elvish
I forgot I was part of the music of choice panel. I've been derelict. Sorry. May I? It's been nearly twenty years since I discovered a great album. It's all listed below. An energy that electrifies the WHOLE album. Each song stands on it's own, but there seems to be a common thread throughout. Rick Allen had lost is left arm before they recorded this album, he seems to really play the drums with an extra passion on every track. Iv'e heard this album at least 300 times over the last 2 decades, I wore out my first cassette in just 6 months. It's as fresh to me today as the first time I ever heard it. Def Leppard - Hysteria "Women" Ooh we ooh Ooh wee ooh In the beginning God made the land Then He made the water and creatures, then He made man He was born with a passion, love and hate A restless spirit with a need for a mate But there was somethin' that was missin', somethin' lost So he came with the answer, here's what it cost One part love, one part wild One part lady, one part child I give you Women! women! - Lots of pretty women Men! men! - They can't live without them Women! women! - Lots of pretty women Men! men! - They can't live without them And in the garden, lust began The animal instinct, the wanton man She fed him with a hunger, an appetite And fillin' with emotion he took a bite It was one part love, one part child One part lover, one part wild I give you [Repeat Chorus] Skin on skin Let the love begin Women! Farin
^ thanks Elvish Moloko ~ Things to Make and Do All songs written by RóisÃn Murphy and Mark Brydon, except where noted. 1. "Radio Moscow" (Eddie Stevens) 2. "Pure Pleasure Seeker" 3. "Absent Minded Friends" 4. "Indigo" 5. "Being Is Bewildering" 6. "Remain the Same" 7. "A Drop in the Ocean" 8. "Dumb Inc." 9. "The Time Is Now" 10. "Mother" 11. "It's Your Problem" (Brydon/Murphy/Stevens) 12. "It's Nothing" 13. "Bingo Massacre" (Brydon/Murphy/Stevens/Paul Slowley) 14. "Somebody Somewhere" (Brydon/Murphy/Ashton Thomas/Dave Cooke) 15. "Just You and Me Dancing" (Brydon/Murphy/Stevens/Paul Slowley) 16. "If You Have a Cross to Bear You May as Well Use It as a Crutch" (Brydon/Murphy/Stevens/Paul Slowley) 17. "Keep Stepping" (Brydon/Murphy/Stevens) 18. "Sing It Back (Boris' Musical Mix)" Considering the esoteric materials that make up Moloko's unusual sound (trip-hop, funk, drum'n'bass, and a decidedly bizarro pop ethic), the group's music is surprisingly coherent and accessible. Roisin Murphy's singing style, which combines a wild variety of voices and textures, from impassively chilly to gorgeously lilting to gleefully offbeat, is instantly recognizable and endearing throughout, while Mark Brydon's broad compositional palette runs the gamut from irresistibly straightforward rock/dance grooves ("Indigo") to highly stylized electro/hip-hop programming (the Timbaland-esque "Absent Minded Friends"). The duo never falls into any of the clichés of any of the genres they exploit, managing instead to sound consistently fresh, adventurous, and enjoyable. Highlights include the buoyant Somebody Somewhere" (featuring a rare vocal turn by Brydon) and the flawless, inscrutable "Indigo" (with its nonsensical chant: "Ramases! Colossus!"). Moloko is the best at what they do mainly because they are the only ones doing it.
