Name your favorite three new wave songs

However, NDW was alot more "pop"-oriented than the new wave genre taken as a whole.

that's completely true! And the reson for this was that the whole music scene was completely commercialised. I would say about 80% of all NDW hits were One (or maybe Two) Hit Wonders.

And people got tired of it pretty soon... the NDW lastet from '82-'83... :P

Some of my favorites, if anyone gives two sh*ts...

"All Mixed Up" - The Cars (along with most anything by the Cars)

"I Don't Like Mondays" - Boomtown Rats

"Talk To Ya Later" - The Tubes

"Eighties" - Killing Joke

"Cruel To Be Kind" - Nick Lowe

"One In A Million" - The Romantics

"Pulling Mussels From A Shell" - The Squeeze

"Guilty" - Classix Nouveau

"No New Tale To Tell" - Love and Rockets

"Nightboat to Cairo" - (and, yes, Madness is MOST DEFINITELY a part of the New Wave)

EDIT: And for those of you who include the Pretenders in the same category, I would like to add: "Kid", "Mystery Achievement", and "Tattooed Love Boys".....KICKASS DEBUT ALBUM!!

Ok, I've tried to narrow it down, and I've consciously omitted some of my favourite punk bands (who might nonetheless be regarded by some as "new wave" given the blurred relationship between the two...)

I think this would make one fantastic "new wave playlist"

Magazine - "Shot By Both Sides"

Ultravox! - "Young Savage"

Punishment Of Luxury - "Puppet Life"

The Rezillos - "Top Of The Pops"

Blondie - "(Touched By Your) Presence Dear"

The Teardrop Explodes - "Reward"

Devo - "The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprise"

Gang Of Four - "I Found That Essence Rare"

The Specials - "Gangsters"

XTC - "Making Plans For Nigel"

The Undertones - "Get Over You"

The Cure - "Primary"

The Passions - "I'm In Love With A German Film Star"

Psychedelic Furs - "Dumb Waiters"

Talking Heads - "Once In A Lifetime"

Skids - "Circus Games"

The Church - "The Unguarded Moment"

The Associates - "Party Fears Two"

The Human League - "Empire State Human"

Bauhaus - "Kick In The Eye"

Joy Division - "Love Will Tear Us Apart"

The B 52s - "Give Me Back My Man"

Department S - "Is Vic There?"

Wreckless Eric - "Whole Wide World"

The Pretenders- "Brass In Pocket"

Wall Of Voodoo - "Mexican Radio"

The Only Ones - "Another Girl, Another Planet"

Ian Dury & The Blockheads - "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick"

Madness - "My Girl"

Nina Hagen - "Wenn Ich Ein Junge War"

The Mighty Wah: - "The Story Of The Blues"

The Chameleons - "In Shreds"

Spizz Energi - "Where's Captain Kirk?"

Lene Lovich - "Lucky Number"

Killing Joke - "Follow The Leader"

The Jam - "Strange Town"

Starjets - "War Stories"

Echo And The Bunnymen - "The Back Of Love"

Siouxsie And The Banshees - "Spellbound"

The Table - "Do The Standing Still"

I've had to exercise self-disciplined here, whittling it down gradually by editing out anything that I can't honestly say is "one my all-time favourite tracks". So, to my surprise, some artists I like quite alot don't feature. If Buzzcocks count as "new wave" rather than punk, then obviously they would be in there, ditto The Clash, X Ray Spex, The Adverts, Penetration, The Damned, Stiff Little Fingers and , oh, too many others to mention...

If I'd included punk bands as well, the list would just have become too long, unwieldy and unmanageable.

Not as cool as Sparks, though.

Absolutely right. Even though they pre-dated new wave, I think Sparks, along with David Bowie, could certainly be considered as "new wave". They had a symbiotic relationship with the genre, influencing the zeitgeist, whilst simultaneously being influenced by it.

Sparks were influential upon quite a few of the early punk/new wave artists, but then were themselves inspired by the Euro-disco productions of Giorgio Moroder which was influencing the direction of dance-music in the late 70s. The result was their excellent "Tryouts For The Human Race" period, and the singles "Beat The Clock" and "Number One Song In Heaven" which were distinctly "new wave" in character.

Similarly; everybody knows how influential Bowie was/is. As well as being a gifted and creative artist, he had a talent for pre-empting and arguably directing pop-trends, for "determining the lie of the land", if you like. At the same time, he had to navigate the shifting cultural sands of the late 70s, that laid waste to many of his early 70s peers. He managed this with aplomb, emerging with his artistic credibility intact. I would suggest his "Scary Monsters & Super Creeps" could validly be regarded as a "classic new wave album".

I still think "Let's Dance" sucked though.

Impassable... I have reached an impasse in trying to come up with only THREE New Wave songs I like. I like everything under the sun which goes by the genre of New Wave - even the junk that gets lumped in and isn't New Wave (i.e. Kim Carnes, Wham!, "Italodisco," German "Schlagger," etc). I just got a private message regarding Bill Nelson. I'm willing to wager I couldn't come up with only three Bill Nelson songs that I like. I can try, but I cannot make any promises that it'll be a definitive list for a top three.

Here goes:

1. "Ghost Rider" by Suicide

2. "Nag, Nag, Nag" by Cabaret Voltaire

3. "Rock Wrock" by Ultravox! (John Foxx fronted)

Here goes again:

1. "The Voice" by Ultravox (Midge Ure fronted)

2. "Sooner Than You Think" by NewOrder

3. "Music That You Can Dance To" by Sparks

And another...

1. "A Question Of Lust" by Depeche Mode

2. "Only You" by Yazoo

3. "Doot Doot" by Freur

Sorry, it cannot be boiled down to three or six - or even nine. Maybe 100

"Nag Nag Nag" by Cabaret Voltaire should have featured in my 40.

"RockWrok" (Ultravox!) is a great track too: I was selecting one track per artist for my "playlist" and plumped for "Young Savage".

If I had been allowing myself multiple tracks per artist, my list would undoubtedly have run into hundreds....
