I'm preeeetty sure getting drunk isn't the main reason people drink. Chiz, if that was the case it wouldn't be a social activity at all, it'd be cheaper to invest in a lame bottle of wine and be done with it at home.

And I don't think most people drink alcohol because they like the taste so much.

One shouldn't forget that alcohol is a drug too, just like with cigarettes, once you're used to it the taste doesn't matter that much.

Otherwise I'll agree with both of you - drinking alcohol is a large part of social interaction in our culture, but it's not the only reason.

 getting drunk is the ONLY reason I ever have any alcohol. I can't stand the taste of it (regardless of what it is) so I only drink when I want to loosen up and get crazy, which happens on average maybe 3 times a year. And I always regret it when I'm hurling the next day and swear I'll never do it again. :beatnik:

On a semi-related note, last night I almost got busted for attending a party where drinking was occurring, despite the fact that (unusually) I had not been drinking. I got in a verbal sparring match with the fat pig cop that was rounding everyone up, and, in a rare victory, my obvious contempt for authority got me out of the situation. Which is good because I already got in trouble 3 weeks ago for possession, and if I got another infraction I would be totally f**ked. Stupid draconian American drinking laws. Not quite as bad as our marijuana laws, but still...

I like the taste and effects of wine too...

So do I; more the effects than the taste, though!

:D

I'm currently enjoying a plate of beef tenderloin stroganoff made with dumpling noodles bathed in a sour cream/sherry wine gravy surrounded by broccoli clusters and a fluted glass 1/2 filled with chablis blanc on the side.

Home-made blueberry cobbler à la mode for dessert.

It's truly a yummy combination!

Damn, my new girlfriend can cook! Hopefully, she'll be half as good in the bedroom as she is in the kitchen!

:)
