Grateful Dead Thread

CRAW

Recommended Posts

I'm new here so cut me some slack if I'm reposting or posting something of no interest, but I'm shocked, almost appalled there isn't a Grateful Dead thread yet. I've done a couple searches and yielded no results.

So let's hear it Dead Heads! What's your favorite albums (live or studio)? Any good stories from any live shows? Good memories, or lack there of? :)

I'm more of an early Grateful Dead fan as opposed to their later stuff. Favorite studio albums of mine include American Beauty, and Workingman's Dead, but for live albums I'd have to go with Live Dead, Dead Set, Europe '72, Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses) (some studio and some live), History of the Grateful Dead Vol. 1 (Bear's Choice), One From the Vault, and I'll throw Reckoning in there too.

I never got into the Dick's Picks, and quite frankly wouldn't know where to begin.

I unfortunately never got to see them live, but I've heard a couple cover/tribute bands, and they were really true to the Dead.

I could have written your first post, Craw

Deadheads are rare around here - you and I might be the only ones. Don't let 'em run you off :P

Another Deadhead joke:

A hippie girl went to a Dead show with terrible tickets. She could barely even see the stage. Once the show began, she noticed an empty seat waaaaay in the front. She slowly made her way towards the stage, dodging ticket checkers left and right, and finally reached the empty seat. She was so close that Bobby could have spit on her. At the set break, she told the guy next to her that she couldn't believe that someone had given up such an incredible seat. The guy said, "Well, my wife and I had tickets to this show together, but she passed away." She said, "I'm so sorry. Couldn't you find someone else to come to the show with you, a friend or a relative or something?" The guy replied, "Nah. They're all at her funeral today."

Inspiration, move me brightly

light the song with sense and color,

hold away despair

More than this I will not ask

faced with mysteries dark and vast

statements just seem vain at last

some rise, some fall, some climb

to get to Terrapin

Counting stars by candlelight

all are dim but one is bright:

the spiral light of Venus

rising first and shining best,

From the northwest corner

of a brand-new crescent moon

crickets and cicadas sing

a rare and different tune

Terrapin Station

in the shadow of the moon

Terrapin Station

and I know we'll be there soon

Terrapin - I can't figure out

Terrapin - if it's an end or the beginning

Terrapin - but the train's got its brakes on

and the whistle is screaming: TERRAPIN

I completely adore Terrapin Station. I am not a huge Dead fan, but am a huge fan of several of their songs. I like all the dreamy songs on Terrapin Station. Awesome stuff.

I listened to Terrapin maybe once (not all the way through either), and I should really give it another try.

Ripple

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine

And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung

Would you hear my voice come through the music

Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken

Perhaps they're better left unsung

I don't know, don't really care

Let there be songs to fill the air

(Chorus)

Ripple in still water

When there is no pebble tossed

Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty

If your cup is full may it be again

Let it be known there is a fountain

That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway

Between the dawn and the dark of night

And if you go no one may follow

That path is for your steps alone

(Chorus)

You who choose to lead must follow

But if you fall you fall alone

If you should stand then who's to guide you?

If I knew the way I would take you home

This song never fails to cheer me up

Box of Rain

Look out of any window

Any morning, any evening, any day

Maybe the sun is shining

Birds are singing or

Rain is falling from a heavy sky -

What do you want me to do,

To do for you to see you through?

This is all a dream we dreamed

One afternoon long ago

Walk out of any doorway

Feel your way, feel your way

Like the day before

Maybe you'll find direction

Around some corner

Where it's been waiting to meet you -

What do you want me to do,

To watch for you while you're sleeping?

Well please don't be surprised

When you find me dreaming too

Look into any eyes

you find by you, you can see

clear through to another day

I know it's been seen before

through other eyes on other days

while going home --

What do you want me to do,

to do for you to see you through?

It's all a dream we dreamed

one afternoon long ago

Walk into splintered sunlight

Inch your way through dead dreams

to another land

Maybe you're tired and broken

Your tongue is twisted

with words half spoken

and thoughts unclear

What do you want me to do

to do for you to see you through

A box of rain will ease the pain

and love will see you through

Just a box of rain -

wind and water -

Believe it if you need it,

if you don't just pass it on

Sun and shower -

Wind and rain -

in and out the window

like a moth before a flame

It's just a box of rain

I don't know who put it there

Believe it if you need it

or leave it if you dare

But it's just a box of rain

or a ribbon for your hair

Such a long long time to be gone

and a short time to be there

I saw The Dead, Allman Bros. and Leon Russell at a big outdoor show at a New Jersey racetrack in the early 70's. The wildest and most unique crowd I've ever seen. It took me a week to come down. I also like Garcia's solo album which had The Wheel and Sugaree on it. Probably from 1976?

"New Speedway Boogie"

Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia

Please don't dominate the rap Jack

if you got nothing new to say

If you please don't back up the track

This train got to run today

I spent a little time on the mountain

Spent a little time on the hill

Heard some say better run away

Others say you better stand still

Now I don't know but I been told

it's hard to run with the weight of gold

Other hand I heard it said

it's just as hard with the weight of lead

Who can deny? Who can deny?

it's not just a change in style

One step done and another begun

in I wonder how many miles?

I spent a little time on the mountain

Spent a little time on the hill

Things went down we don't understand

but I think in time we will

Now I don't know but I was told

in the heat of the sun a man died of cold

Do we keep on coming or stand and wait

with the sun so dark and the hour so late?

You can't overlook the lack Jack

of any other highway to ride

It's got no signs or dividing lines

and very few rules to guide

I spent a little time on the mountain

Spent a little time on the hill

I saw things getting out of hand

I guess they always will

Now I don't know but I been told

if the horse don't pull you got to carry the load

I don't know whose back's that strong

Maybe find out before too long

One way or another

One way or another

One way or another

this darkness got to give

One way or another

One way or another

One way or another

this darkness got to give

"Brown-Eyed Women"

Words by Robert Hunter; music by Jerry Garcia

Gone are the days when the ox fall down

he'd take up the yoke and plow the fields around

Gone are the days when the ladies said "please,

gently Jack Jones won't you come to me?"

Brown eyed women and red grenadine

the bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean

Sound of the thunder with the rain pouring down

and it looks like the old man's getting on

In 1920 when he stepped to the bar

he drank to the dregs of the whiskey jar

In 1930 when the Wall caved in

he paid his way selling red eye gin

Brown eyed women and red grenadine

the bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean

Sound of the thunder with the rain pouring down

and it looks like the old man's getting on

Delilah Jones was the mother of twins

two times over and the rest was sins

Raised eight boys, only I turned bad

Didn't get the lickings that the other ones had

Brown eyed women and red grenadine

the bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean

Sound of the thunder with the rain pouring down

and it looks like the old man's getting on

Tumble down shack in Bigfoot County

Snowed so hard that the roof caved in

Delilah Jones went to meet her God

and the old man never was the same again

Brown eyed women and red grenadine

the bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean

Sound of the thunder with the rain pouring down

and it looks like the old man's getting on

Daddy made whiskey and he made it well

Cost two dollars and it burned like hell

I cut hick'ry to fire the still

Drink down a bottle and you're ready to kill

Brown eyed women and red grenadine

the bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean

Sound of the thunder with the rain pouring down

and it looks like the old man's getting on

Garcia/Hunter -
