Dappled Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 From Allmusic.com "If you were anywhere within the vicinity of a radio or television during the summer and fall of 1988, you could not escape “Kokomoâ€. It would become for all intents and purposes the final number one from the Beach Boys, which was no doubt bolstered by MTV’s incessant airing of the music video, as well as being prominently featured on the OST of the Tom Cruise fluff film Cocktail (1988). The track boasts a formidable supergroup quartet of co-writers including former Mamas & Papas leader John Phillips, Beach Boys vocalist Mike Love, famed producer/musician Terry Melcher and singer/songwriter Scott McKenzie (of “ San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in...†fame). Unfortunately the final product doesn’t really reflect such an A-list talent roster. Notably absent from the all-star ensemble of writers, as well as missing from the track itself, is Brian Wilson. The band’s former musical and spiritual leader was both supporting his own self-titled solo effort, and perhaps more tellingly, the hapless victim of some concurrently nasty inner-band politics. Regardless, this would stand as a final vocal statement from Carl Wilson (guitar/vocals) who shares the lead with Mike Love. The song itself is simple and definitely hook driven. The unforgettable chorus of “Aruba, Jamaica/ Ooo I wanna take you/To Bermuda, Bahama come on pretty mama/Key Largo, Montego baby why don't we go …†effortlessly takes the verse to the Carl Wilson solo vocal bridge “Ooo I wanna take you down to Kokomo/We'll get there fast/And then we'll take it slow/That's where we wanna go/Way down to Kokomoâ€. His voice has retained the tender and dulcet quality that defined his contributions to earlier tracks such as “The Traderâ€. That contrasts Mike Love’s rather uninspired lead vocals which are not as much sung as they are spoken in an annoying over-enunciated whisper."
edna Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 The Beach Boys had a #1 before Beatlemania? Well, maybe if you consider than Beatlemania started around 1965, you´re right... ...so go, go Sammy, go, go go...
miamisammy29 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 I got it right? Damn! Okay, here's a new one: Legend has it that this now deceased musician, infamous for his repulsing backstage antics, once traded his first class airplane seat for a roadie's coach seat because the musician had passed out and urinated in his. He passed it off as if he was returning a favor to the roadie.
miamisammy29 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Now, Edna, you know it's NOT Phil Collins. The question says the man is dead, not his career.
c_s_1987 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 The only musician I know who has urinated on an airplane is Izzy Stradlin from Guns N' Roses, but he isn't dead. ...Who is Keith Moon? (probably not, but the only name that sprung to my head).
miamisammy29 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 It's not Moonie, either, but you're both on the right track. Try again.
The Seeker Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 It has to be a drummer, then, I think... Who is John Bonham?
miamisammy29 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Of course, it's John Bonham. There was also a famous incident where he took a dump in some groupie's shoe at a backstage party. You're up, Dude.
The Seeker Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Keith Moon was my first thought too, but I couldn't remember such an incident... Alright, I'll think of a new question. If someone else has one, go ahead.
The Seeker Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 This travelling revue led by a famous British musician toured England in 1974 and was inspired by the Rock'n'Roll Circus.
miamisammy29 Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 Phil Collins isn´t dead yet? No, he is not. And I know that for a fact, because I would have been the one to kill him.
Rayzor Posted March 30, 2007 Author Report Posted March 30, 2007 Is it the Rolling Thunder Revue? (something like that with Dylan I think)
Rayzor Posted March 30, 2007 Author Report Posted March 30, 2007 Awww, geez Seeker... you're gonna make me Google? I'll leave it for someone who might know it...
The Seeker Posted March 30, 2007 Report Posted March 30, 2007 Those aren't clues you can google easily, but go ahead and try it!
phil Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 Who is Delaney & Bonnie with Eric Clapton? Delaney & Bonnie with Clapton & Dave Mason
The Seeker Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 No, that's not what I'm looking for either. A recently released DVD about the life of the musician who started this is called the same as this revue.
The Seeker Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 Not quite. But you're very very very close.
edna Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 Aha... Who´s Ronnie Lane? In case I´m correct, what´s The Passing Show? (I googled for this one...)
edna Posted March 31, 2007 Report Posted March 31, 2007 Oh... Well, I have to think about one... I´ll see what I can find in my files... I don´t feel bright today... His father was a communist who died in WWII when this British musican was 4 months old.
