Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas -- I think Frank Sinatra did the most famous version, but I'm not sure...anyone?

Fin, I believe it was Judy Garland who first popularized this song. Many have done it including the great version by Sinatra. Check out a version by Alison David/Paul Hardcastle. Different and very good.

My selections:

You're My Christmas Present-Jimmy Beaumont/The Skyliners

Christmas Wrapping-The Waitresses

Picking two today that came immediately to mind. I love Christmas/Seasonal music. Sleigh Ride is probably the song I like best but I couldn't decide upon a singular version.

Wow.. How many versions of Little Drummer Boy can we vote for in one list!? :P It's my favortite christmas song after all.. I was going to nominate Jars of Clay's version, but I think we've got enough to choose from already.

Sarah McLachlan - Song for a Winter's Night

Her version of Gordon Lightfoot's song is just haunting..

The lamp is burnin' low upon my table top

The snow is softly falling

The air is still within the silence of my room

I hear your voice softly calling

If I could only have you near

To breathe a sigh or two

I would be happy just to hold the hands I love

Upon this winter night with you

The smoke is rising in the shadows overhead

My glass is almost empty

I read again between the lines upon each page

The words of love you sent me

If I could know within my heart

That you were lonely too

I would be happy just to hold the hands I love

Upon this winter night with you

The fire is dying now, my lamp is growing dim

The shades of night are liftin'

The morning light steals across my windowpane

Where webs of snow are driftin'

If I could only have you near

To breathe a sigh or two

I would be happy just to hold the hands I love

Upon this winter night with you

And to be once again with with you

And,

Gabriel's Message - Marillion

Words are traditional

The angel Gabriel from heaven came

His wings as drifted snow

His eyes as flame

From God all hail the angel said to Mary

Most highly favoured lady

Gloria

"Fear not for you shall bear a holy child

By him to God be reconciled

His name shall be Emmanuel

The long-foretold"

Most highly favoured lady

Gloria

Then gentle Mary humbly bowed her head

"To me be as it pleaseth God" she said

"My soul shall praise and magnify his Holy name"

Most highly favoured lady

Gloria

And so she said "How happy I shall be

All generations will remember me

For God has kept his promises to Israel"

Most highly favoured lady

Gloria

Of her Emmanuel the Christ was born

On Bethlehem upon that Christmas morn

And Christian folk throughout the world will ever say

Most highly favoured lady

Gloria

Thanks, Joe!

I haven't found the version by David/Hardcastle yet, but I'll make sure to continue to look for it.

I think I'll go with Frank Sinatra's version.

I think the song originated with Judy Garland's version in the movie Meet Me In St. Louis .

In the storyline, it was sung with a biting pathos. That got lost when it later turned into a Holiday standard.

Although my two favourite Christmas carols are O Come, O Come Emmanuel and The Coventry Carol, I don't have particular versions that I favour over any others, so I'll nominate:

Snowfall - The Manhattan Transfer. This song really showcases the rich harmonies and great vocal talents of this foursome.

I Wonder As I Wander - Julie Andrews. Her gorgeous, clear soprano seems tailor-made for Christmas carols.

We've got only just over 40 songs so far. Where's the love?

Show your Christmas spirit and nominate some songs! If you can't think of any, ask someone - I've got at least three that I wanted to nominate in addition to what I did...

Keep those doggies rolling... rawhide.

I would like to renominate my original pick, which was "Happy XMas (War Is Over)" by John Lennon. The Grinch :) told me it was disqualified because it made the last top ten. But, since this is a "special" top ten the nomination will count.

So I guess I'll go fix my original post.
