Otokichi
After all these years, I can finally agree that "MTV" has NOTHING to do with music. I recall that Husker Du said, the video gets people interested enough to listen to the music, but isn't an end in itself.
blind-fitter
A lyrical interlude: "M.T.V.-Get Off The Air" by DEAD KENNEDYS Fun Fun Fun in the fluffy chair Flame up the herb Woof down the beer [click!] Hi I'm your video DJ I always talk like I'm wigged out on quaaludes I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go My job is to help destroy What's left of your imagination By feeding you endless doses Of sugar-coated mindless garbage So don't create Be sedate Be a vegetable at home And thwack on that dial If we have our way even you will believe This is the future of rock and roll How far will you go How low will you stoop To tranquilize our minds with your sugar-coated swill You've turned rock and roll rebellion Into Pat Boone sedation Making sure nothing's left to the imagination M.T.V. Get off the M.T.V. Get off the M.T.V. Get off the air Get off the air See the latest rejects from the muppet show Wag their tits and their dicks As they lip-synch on screen There's something I don't like About a band who always smiles Another tax write-off For some schmuck who doesn't care M.T.V. Get off the air And so it was Our beloved corporate gods Claimed they created rock video Allowing it to sink as low in one year As commercial TV has in 25 "It's the new frontier," they say It's wide open, anything can happen But you've got a lot of nerve To call yourself a pioneer When you're too god-damn conservative To take real chances. Tin-eared Graph-paper brained accountants Instead of music fans Call all the shots at giant record companies now The lowest common denominator rules Forget honesty Forget creativity The dumbest buy the mostest That's the name of the game But sales are slumping And no one will say why Could it be they put out one too many lousy records?!? M.T.V.-Get off the air! NOW

Lexxi Marie
Yes. MTV popularized rock and made it the norm. Rock would still be dangerous and outspoken if MTV didn't exist.

Ombre Vivante
In a way, I don't care for the bulk of Rock, so they can shove it as far as I'm concerned. I can sleep at night with the knowledge I don't wanna listen to led zep, aerosmith, the stones, u2, and the rest of those bloated Rock acts. There are a few exceptions (The Beatles), so it doesn't matter if MTV made it better or worse. Gimme Krautrock, Electronic, and New Wave (the synth kind) music any day. Coincidentally, some of the more popular bands of the latter genre broke through MTV
PoleyBum
Hmm...If MTV hadnt existed...would Music Videos exist today? They would have yeah, Music Videos were made as a new way of publicity. And although they were kind of made for showing on MTV they would have been made some other way. If you go to Wikipedia Music Video << that link, it's got a pretty long winded history of music video but its worthwile reading. And besides, the decent music video's are on MTV2 now. Rayzor
MTV sux and does nothing for real music... it's about image and not the art. That's why so many rotten bands have actually sold albums: they made a good video. Used to be radio that let you decide if you liked the music... now you decide if the band members are good-looking
Danielj
MTV Mighta been good back in the day, I couldn't tell you, but they now have shows that seriously have NOTHING to do with music. First they went from all music, then to shows that feature some musicians, and now none. Date MY Mom, Room Raiders . . . What is that. but Pimp My Ride and Cribs I am down with, those shows are sweet

jman14141414
I'm not sure if I really believe music would be better if there MTV never became popular or never existed in the first place. No matter what we will always have "bad" artists around. As long as some people enjoy a certain style music there will be people who disagree with that style(in this case the over-commercialized pop music.) Believe it or not there were people who thought Disco was the next best thing. Were they wrong in thinking so? Most people think so(myself included) but does that mean it was bad? I think that's up to interpretation. Errr I'm getting off track here, my point is that no matter if have MTV, VH1 or PUL(yes I just made up a new station) there will always be "bad" artists. Most people will agree that The Beegee's were "bad", but hey there wasn't an MTV in the 60's. To sum this whole rant up MTV(or having an equivalent of MTV) does not equal bad music.
