Mike
Songfacts - Mississippi Queen Launched in 1976 for America’s Bicentennial celebration, the Mississippi Queen was the grandest and largest paddle wheeler the river has ever seen. The Mississippi River, derived from the old Ojibwe word misi-ziibi meaning 'great river' (gichi-ziibi 'big river' at its headwaters), is the second-longest river in the United States; the longest is the Missouri River, which flows into the Mississippi. Taken together, they form the largest river system in North America. If measured from the head of the Missouri, the length of the Missouri-Mississippi combination is approximately 3900 miles (6300 km), making the combination the 4th longest river in the world. Apart from the Missouri, the largest of the many large Mississippi tributaries is the Ohio River. The Mississippi River is the main river that supports much of the American civilization. Mississippi Queen, if you know what I mean Mississippi Queen, she taught me everything Way down around Vicksburg, around Louisiana Way There lived cajun lady, aboard the Mississippi Queen You know she was a dancer She moved better on wine While the rest of them dudes were'a gettin' their kicks, Boy I beg your pardon I was getting mine Mississippi Queen, if you know what I mean Mississippi Queen, she taught me everything This lady she asked me if I could be her man You know that I told her I'd do what I can To keep her looking pretty Buy her dresses that shine While the rest of them dudes were making their bread Boy I beg your pardon I was losing mine You know she was a dancer She moved better on wine While the rest of them dudes were getting their kicks Boy I beg your pardon I was getting mine
Lucky
Now you are talkin! That's beautiful Mike. I live about 5 miles south of the mouth of the Missouri, on a little peninsula-like area between the two rivers. The Missouri actually flows south to north, directly in front of my house. When I open the door, I can see it. When RonJon was here, he was surprised at how much narrower the Mississippi looked than he thought. I explained about the flood gates, in front of the city. Away from the city, it is wide, and it is deep. Both can be tricky, but of the two, the Missouri is the more treacherous. The current is faster, and there are more sunken islands, sandbars, undertows and swirling eddys. Unfortunately, it's also filthy. There is a warning against eating any fish from the Missouri. The rural Mississippi however, is one of the more beautiful sights I've ever seen. Thanks for displaying the beauty of it. The big paddlewheelers can still be seen going up and down the river. Or standing still. Those would be the gambling casinos! that would be one of my favorite songs too, by the way....

Stellathomas
The prospect of cruising up the Ohio River from Cincinnati to my hometown of Pittsburgh didn't exactly thrill me. I am a cruise columnist, and I have grown accustomed to the azure waters of the Mediterranean and the glitzy glamour of ocean-going vessels. What I saw in the brochure in front of me was a river I've lived next to for a decade and a steam-driven paddle-wheeler, the 418-foot-long American Queen. -------------------------- Stellathomas Mississippi Drug Addiction

glockstrap
If I'm not mistaken, thats another one of the riverboats that stops by our little town of Marietta Ohio. The Ohio has a lot of scenery and its always neat to see one of the big boats coming through.
