The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced its nominees for its class of 2007. Nine nominees are on the ballot, five of which will be inducted on March 12, 2007 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. The five inductees will be revealed in January.

R.E.M. leads the list of nominees for next year's induction, and one can assume the Athens, GA band is a lock to be voted in. Patti Smith, a major influence of R.E.M., is also on the ballot, as are Punk forefathers The Stooges. Other nominees include Rock superstars Van Halen, Funk band Chic, British Invasion band the Dave Clark Five, Hip-Hop innovators Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, '60s girl group The Ronettes and Soul/Pop singer Joe Tex.

With the exception of R.E.M. and Van Halen, all the other nominated acts have appeared on the ballot in the past. For an artist to be eligible for the Hall, their first single had to have been released no later than 1981.

Interesting mix this time.
