c_s_1987
I have decided to open this up now, and I will keep it open for around 2 weeks. Feel free to continue campaigning. THE SONGFACTORS' CHOICE ULTIMATE TOP TEN - No nominations are required, as the songs have been selected from our 25 top tens, and the 5 previous rounds. - Voting rules will be exactly the same as the normal top tens - rank your favourite songs in the list from 1-10, and 10 points will be given to your number 1 song, 9 for number 2 etc. - We have decided to restrict eligibility to vote to only those people who have nominated or voted in at least one of our Top Tens. c_s_1987
1. Kashmir - Led Zeppelin (1975) - Amazing song, with an incredibly catchy Indian/Arabic style guitar and mellotron backtrack, and superb drumming as usual from John Bonham. 2. Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd (1975) - A 26 minute long psychedelic masterpiece from the masters of psychedelic rock. 3. Layla - Derek and the Dominos (1970) - Powerful intro with a fantastic guitar riff, and finished sweetly with a piano and guitar section. 4. Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd (1973) - Another song with excellent guitar throughout. 5. My Generation - The Who (1965) - Very catchy 60s classic. 6. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix (1967) - Ditto. 7. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd (1975) - "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year." 8. Paint It, Black - The Rolling Stones (1966) - The sitar is such a great instrument in songs like this. I miss Brian Jones. 9. Alive - Pearl Jam (1991) - Starts with one of the greatest guitar riffs of the last three decades, finishes with one of the greatest guitar solos of the last three decades. A great song that is bizarrely about an incestuous relationship between a mother and her son. 10. White Room - Cream (1968) - One of the greatest classics of Eric Clapton's long and distinguished career. If you don't like this song, shame on you. 11. Space Oddity - David Bowie (1969) 12. In My Life - The Beatles (1965) 13. Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones (1970) 14. Dazed and Confused - Led Zeppelin (1969) 15. Sympathy For The Devil - The Rolling Stones (1968) 16. Voodoo Child (Slight Return) - Jimi Hendrix (1968) 17. She's A Rainbow - The Rolling Stones (1968) 18. Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan (1965) 19. Light My Fire - The Doors (1967) 20. A Whiter Shade Of Pale - Procol Harum (1967) 21. Imagine - John Lennon Plastic Ono Band (1971) 22. While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles (1968) 23. Angie - The Rolling Stones (1973) 24. Highway Star - Deep Purple (1972) 25. Sounds Of Silence, The - Simon & Garfunkel (1965) 26. Hush - Deep Purple - (1968) 27. Day Tripper - The Beatles (1965) 28. Black Dog - Led Zeppelin (1971) 29. Son Of A Preacher Man - Dusty Springfield (1969) 50. Subterranean Homesick Blues - Bob Dylan (1965) I didn't originally want to rank all fifty songs, since it seems critical to the songs near the bottom of my list. However, I will say that every single song on this list is great in my opinion. I have heard them all, and I wish I could hear songs like Subterranean Homesick Blues, Ain't Too Proud To Beg , Georgia On My Mind and Runaway on my favourite radio stations more often. Judo
In compiling this final voting round of this ultimate top ten I found myself being cruel to so many good songs. I also found that 3 of my votes went straight to the Beatles, so in order to be fair I replaced two Beatles songs with a couple of others. I can't tell you how hard it was to come up with : 1. All My Loving - The Beatles (1963) 2. Runaway - Del Shannon (1961) 3. California Dreamin' - The Mamas & The Papas (1966) 4. (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay - Otis Redding (1968) 5. CanAm
1. In My Life - The Beatles 2. California Dreamin' - The Mamas And The Papas. My favourite folk/rock song and one of my top twenty songs of all time. 3. God Only Knows - The Beach Boys. I love, love, love this song. 4. Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd. One of the greatest guitar solos in rock music. 5. All My Loving - The Beatles. At one time this was my favourite Beatles tune, but it has recently been supplanted by In My Life. This was the first song I remember hearing as a child and as such, it will always be one of my sentimental favourites. 6. Day Tripper - The Beatles. What can I say? I love the Beatles. 7. Sounds Of Silence - Simon and Garfunkel. A brilliant piece of songwriting. 8. Runaway - Del Shannon. A classic that will never grow old. 9. Sultans Of Swing - Dire Straits. Not my favourite song by this underrated group, but a great song nonetheless. 10. My Sharona - The Knack. Perhaps the greatest one hit wonders of them all. TheLizard
Because it's impossible to make a bad list! Of course, it is impossible to make a relatively-not-so-good list if you don't include any Doors songs. Edited October 11, 2006 by Guest Included an unneccesary "not", thereby causing confusion. Silly me.
Steel2Velvet
Because it's impossible not to make a bad list! Of course, it is impossible to make a relatively-not-so-good list if you don't include any Doors songs. I'd like to take a shot at interpreting this last post. Not trying to be uppity or anything ... I just struggle with double and triple negatives. "Because (the nominees have all won previously) it's impossible to make a bad list! Of course, it is possible to make a relatively-not-so-good list if you don't include any Doors songs." Hope that was your meaning, Lizard. If so, I can sleep well tonight.
