Songs for Tribute

Elvish

Recommended Posts

I'm going to burn a CD for my Mom, brother and sister in celebration of my dad's life. Ideally, I'd like a good mix of sad/slow and happy/upbeat.

Also, we're looking for a few sort of low-key songs to play when we spread his ashes.

At the funeral, we played

"Life Without You" Stevie Ray Vaughan

"It's Not Supposed to Be That Way" Willie Nelson (he wrote it for his dauther)

A pastor friend of my parents played an acoustic version of Amazing Grace and everyone walked out to the first half of "Freebird"

Thanks in advance for the help, y'all :)

Crystal, there's a song by Linda Eder called Even Now which might be appropriate. It's a lovely song. Here are the lyrics:

Even Now

Even now...I remember all the empty spaces

You filled with LOVE

Even now...Every corner of the world we shared

Is still filled with LOVE

Even now...not a day goes by

When I don't ache for you

Through my tears I still hear your laughter even now

Stars still shine when they're gone

Hearts that break will still beat on

Letting go's the hardest thing to do

'Cause all those feelings start

And time can't change my heart

It all leads back to you

Even now...you are in my dreams and in my dreams

You always will be

Even now...You're the one true thing that brings my heart

Back home here to me

When I'm scared...I can close my eyes

You are there...Ever young

And somehow, I can always find you even now

From all the memories kept inside

To all the dreams we knew, the rush of you

Will always be a part of me

Even now...you are in my dreams and in my dreams

You always will be

Even now...You're the one true thing that brings my heart

Back home here to me

Even now...In my darkest night

Still you shine silver light

So I fall through forever with you even now

Another good song is Shine by Randy Crawford.

this song has been performed by johnny cash, ben harper, jeff buckley, bob dylan, the byrds and probably many others.

i hope it all goes well for you. it will be a fitting tribute to your father's life to have the people he loved arranging it. i'm thinking of you and your family.

Satisfied Mind

How many times have

You heard someone say

If I had his money

I could do things my way

But little they know

That it's so hard to find

One rich man in ten

With a satisfied mind

Once I was waitin'

In fortune and fame

Everything that I dreamed for

To get a start in life's game

Then suddenly it happened

I lost every dime

But I'm richer by far

With a satisfied mind

Money can't buy back

Your youth when you're old

Or a friend when you're lonely

Or a love that's grown cold

The wealthiest person

Is a pauper at times

Compared to the man

With a satisfied mind

When my life has ended

And my time has run out

My friends and my loved ones

I'll leave there's no doubt

But one thing's for certain

When it comes my time

I'll leave this old world

With a satisfied mind

How many times have

You heard someone say

If I had his money

I could do things my way

But little they know

That it's so hard to find

One rich man in ten

With a satisfied mind

Great suggestions, y'all. :)

For some strange reason, I'm drawing a complete blank when it comes to appropriate blues songs. How ironic is that? I have "Six Strings Down" - not particularly a version I really want to use, but it's all I've got.

Can anyone think of any good blues songs that would work? Where's bluesy when you need him? ;)

How about some upbeat blues instrumentals to celebrate his life.

Work Song - Paul Butterfield Blues Band

Low Society - Lowell Fulson

Hide Away - Freddie King

Boilermaker - Stevie Ray Vaughan

a slower paced ---> mid tempo instrumental would be -

Every Beat of My Heart - James Brown's Band - an old Johnny Otis tune.

or maybe -

Bob Away My Blues

and

Blue Ridge Mountain Sky - both by Marshall Tucker

Artist/Band: Tomlinson Trent

Lyrics for Song: One Wing In The Fire

Lyrics for Album: Country Is My Rock

Daddy's been a back-row Baptist,

With his share of front-row sin.

His Saturday night still on his breath,

Every Sunday when he'd walk in.

He's never led the Benediction,

He's never sang in the choir.

But he's an angel with no halo,

An' one wing in the fire.

Mamma lives by the Bible,

The Bible lives by the bed.

An' she's lied alone so many nights,

With scriptures in her head.

Prayin': "Good Lord, just be with him,

"I know his Faith is tired,

"But he's an angel with no halo,

"An' one wing in the fire."

"An' I know he lives a little left of livin' right,

"An he's come close to goin' way to far a few times.

"But I'd trade a thousand prayers if just one prayer would come true:

"Lord, please believe in him, like I believe in you."

Daddy's always been there for me,

From T-Ball to touchdowns.

Fixed my car an' fixed my heart,

When they've been broken down.

I know he calls for more forgiveness,

Than most folks do require,

But he's an angel with no halo,

An' one wing in the fire.

An' I know he lives a little left of livin' right,

An he's come close to goin' way to far a few times.

But I'd trade a thousand prayers if just one prayer would come true:

Lord, please believe in him, like I believe in you.

Well, I just can't imagine,

What Heaven might be like.

If me an' Mamma make it,

Wiithout Daddy by our side.

Lord, could you please remember,

When it's time to call us higher:

That he's an angel with no halo,

An' one wing in the fire.

Ooooh.

Thanks, Peachy. I'll take that cyber hug and raise you a Radhi *squish*

Not to be a bummer or anything, but I'm having a rough day and music helps me deal :)

"Too Old To Die Young" ~ Moe Bandy

If life is like a candle bright

Then death must be the wind

You know you can close your window tight

And it still comes blowing in

So I will climb the highest hill

And I'll watch the rising sun

And I pray that I won't feel the chill

Till I'm too old to die young

Chorus:

Let me watch my children grow

To see what they become

Lord don't let that cold wind blow

Till I'm too old to die young

I have had some real good friends

I thought would never die

But now all that I got left of them

Are these tear drops in my eyes

So if I could have one wish today

And I know it would be done

I'd say everyone could stay

Till they're too old too die young

Repeat chorus twice
