"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times."

Opening line from Charles Dickens', A Tale Of Two Cities.

and also, from the same book...

"It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known."

Words before his guillotining by Sidney Carton.

"Göttin, bleibe gnadig" from Goethe's Faust.

ohh high German literatur

there are many quotes from Faust, that have developped to actual expressions / sayings...

"Da steh Ich nun, Ich armer Tor,

und bin so klug, als wie zuvor"

"Alles Vergängliche

Ist nur ein Gleichnis;

Das Unzulängliche,

Hier wird's Ereignis;

Das Unbeschreibliche,

Hier ist's getan;

Das Ewig-Weibliche

Zieht uns hinan."

“A man that is born falls into a dream like a man who falls into the sea. If he tries to climb out into the air as inexperienced people endeavor to do, he drowns—nicht wahr? . . . No! I tell you! The way is to the destructive element submit yourself, and with the exertions of your hands and feet in the water make the deep, deep sea keep you up. So if you ask me—how to be? . . . I will tell you! . . . In the destructive element immerse.†from Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim, ch 20.

Maybe not my favorite quote, but a rememberable one.

"'This is the best goddam machine in town!' said Dwayne. 'She'll f*** you and tell you she loves you, and she won't shut up until you buy her a Colonel Sanders Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise!'"

-Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut

That's my favorite.

I'm reading that right now because you requested it, and I have to say it's one of the funniest and best books I have ever read. So many great quotes (many which can't be reprinted) from the master of satire.

From the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:

Ford: "You'd better be prepared for the jump into Hyperspace, it's unpleasantly like being drunk."

"What's so unpleasant about being drunk?" asked Arthur.

Ford replied, "Try asking a glass of water."

The first time I read this book, I had to read that part about ten times before I got it. I could quote more from Hitchhiker's, but if I got too into it I'd end up typing the entire book.

It's great, isn't it? My other favorite part is when Trout's books and illustrations are described.

"Old friend", Ix-Nay said, "Grief is like the wake behind a boat. It starts out as a huge wave that follows close behind you and is big enough to swamp and drown you if you suddenly stop moving forward. But if you do keep moving, the big wake will eventually dissipate. And after a long enough time, the waters of your life get calm again, and that is when the memories of those who have left begin to shine as bright and as enduring as the stars above".

Jimmy Buffett, "A Salty Piece Of Land".

Ken.

Yeah, that was the part I couldn't print on here. ;)

Where are you in the book?

Are you bothered by the lack of plot?

Another one of my favorite lines...I can't remember exactly, but Dwayne is talking to one of his employees about the image of the kind of car he's selling. Any time he interacts with that specific employee is hilarious.

Oh yeah, and the Pluto Gang!

On pouvait dire... Oh!

Pédant: " L'animal seul, Monsieur, qu'Aristophane

Appelle Hippocampelephantocamelos

Admiratif: " Pour un parfumeur, quelle enseigne ! "

Lyrique: " Est-ce une conque, êtes-vous un triton ? "

Naïf: " Ce monument, quand le visite-t-on ? "

Campagnard: " He, arde ! C'est-y un nez ? Nanain !

Militaire: " Pointez contre cavalerie ! "

Pratique: " Voulez-vous le mettre en loterie ?

Assurément, Monsieur, ce sera le gros lot! "

A détruit l'harmonie! Il en rougit, le traître! "

Me servir toutes ces folles plaisanteries,
