Smells

Prompted by someone's comment on another thread: what are your favourite smells?

A couple of mine to start you off...

freshly-chopped coriander

play-doh

Oh, and while we're about it, what about your "worst smells"?

I hate it when I have to dispose of flowers that have been in the vase too long and the stems and water have gone manky.

My favourite smells are:

Vanilla

Lavender

Allspice

Jasmine

Rock sea salt

Rain

Burning matches

Petrol

Berries

Bad ones:

Garbage juice is the worst.

Cheesey feet/toenails.

Boys general area smells when they think they are alone and will have enough time before a girl is in their vicinity to "air out the place".

Manky, was screwed up on the floor/under the bed, worn a few times, whiffed and sprayed with "disguising" deoderant shirts.

Wotsits.

the air before it rains

fresh hay

baking bread

my son's shampoo/body wash

pine (thanks, Jenny!)

Ugh smells:

cigarette smoke (fresh, stale, it's all gross)

cat pee

outhouses (when camping, etc.)

bleu cheese dressing (i.e. smelly socks)

My friend who's getting her masters in psychology said in one of her classes they studied a test done regarding the effect of aroma on humans. The strongest effect of an aroma was on males, and it was cinnamon. It's because it causes a rush of blood to the... um... privates.

had to add Jenny's idea in...

The smells that make me happiest are

Wet neoprene rubber, the open water intermingled with 2 stoke engine oil and Johnson and Johnson baby shampoo (all diving smells)

The smell of Mom's Christmas turkey on Christmas Morning

The smell of wet asphalt shortly after a summer rain begins.

A freshly cut lawn.

The smell of my Grampa's garage in the high of summer when I was a small kid. A combination of heat, gas, oil, lawn clippings, sun-heated wood from the rafters, clean rags and a hint of Brut cologne. Just writing that makes me miss Grampa. Toss in a radio tinnily saying "Ici a Radio Canada" and I am 8 years old again.

The smell of things growing, a green smell if you will, best caught by yourself on a bicycle path deep in the woods.

Dirt. Good black soil.

The perfume "Tabu". Moms favorite when I was a kid and comforting for whatever reason.

Mambo (or Mamba) another woman's perfume, reminds me of a girlfriend I never really got over.

Ken.

How I ache to once more to

Smell the sea breeze at dawn

Breathe deeply its portions of

Whale, coral and prawn

Bathed in saltened scent

As the world fills my nose;

Ingesting battered tide as it

Goes where it goes.

I know, gusty forest pines

Freshen not just tanged air

But cleanse muddied thoughts as

Inhaled crisply there

And mild wind lifts fragrance

Off of swaying bluebells

As it skirts ´cross maid meadow and

Her damped earthen smells.

But a sea breeze names me

Wherever it´s found

Whispering alluring, compelling near

Something fully profound.

Been blown wild in broad flatland,

Lost strange midst swayed trees;

But a wester´s a lover´s voice,

“Wind home to the sea.â€

......

Don't like the smell of: used ashtrays (or the rooms they are in)

boiled cabbage

rotting meat

some heavy perfumes
