OLD 55
c s, I'm not singling you out. I reckon you put a lot of thought into your nominations. I've touted my views on lonnng songs many times. I'd rather listen to three great Pop Singles than a 10 minute Album Track anytime. (Short attention span). Things seem to work pretty well the way we've been going, so I'm certainly not going to impose my views on anyone. :guitar:

The Seeker
Great choices, Seeker! I didn't know anyone else here was familiar with Smokie. I've been listening to their music since the late 70's (boy, am I old!). I love their stuff. As far as I know, the only North American hit for the group was Stumbling In, a duet by Suzie Quatro and Chris Norman. Thanks. And as for Smokie... I was surprised to learn that there's few people here who know their stuff. I've been listening to them for ages and somehow always thought they were quite famous. Farin
There were/are pretty big in Germany. Don't know about the US, though...
edna
Smokie are not very well known in Spain neither... I know "living next door to Alice" and also "Stumbling In" (I like these songs) and I thought they were hits in the US... I didn't even know they were british... blind-fitter
Smokie are not very well known in Spain neither... I know "living next door to Alice" and also "Stumbling In" (I like these songs) and I thought they were hits in the US... I didn't even know they were british... They were from Diggs' town of Wakefield or somewhere thereabouts. Their list of UK hits includes "If You Think You Know How To Love Me", "Don't Play Your Rock and Roll To Me", Living Next Door To Alice", "It's Your Life", "Needles And Pins", "Oh Carol": all Top 10s! They disappeared around 1978, but continued to enjoy popularity abroad, particularly in Germany: generally in places relatively unaffected by punk/new-wave developments, which hindered their credibility at home. (Poor fashion sense and mullet hair-dos proving no obstacle to success in the land of Bratwurst and Lederhosen....) They resurfaced in 1995, when their biggest hit was re-released with potty-mouthed "comedian" Roy Chubby Brown on guest vocals. The utterly hilarious result of this positively Satanic collaboration, "Living Next Door To Alice (Who The F* Is Alice?)" reached No3 in the UK charts in August '95. How this happened remains a mystery... At some point, though I'm very vague on the details, ex-members of Smokie could be found in the band Black Lace, famous for their much-maligned party favourites "Agadoo", "Superman" and "Do The Conga", and kiddies' party-hit "I Am The Music Man". blind-fitter
Smokie are not very well known in Spain neither... I know "living next door to Alice" and also "Stumbling In" (I like these songs) and I thought they were hits in the US... I didn't even know they were british... "Stumblin In" was actually a fairly minor hit in the UK (No 41) for Suzi Quatro, a duet with Smokie's Chris Norman; they had a similarly "husky" vocal style. Both artists made regular use of the Chinn/Chapman songwriting partnership, which probably explains this collaboration. People tend to credit it to Suzi Q and overlook Norman's involvement. Lucky
Joe, with those particular names, you could just as easily be down the street from me, as in Bavaria!
katie_sane
I thought Smokie were pretty big in Oz...but then again, I wasn't born back then, so I'll have to defer this one to the man who was on the scene, Old55.
The Seeker
Thanks for your info on the top of the page, fitter. I've always been wondering why sometimes they play Living Next Door To Alice with and sometimes without that 'Who the f* is Alice' part. I never noticed they weren't the same song/recording. Thanks for the information, BF. I have their greatest hits CD and one of their albums, but I really didn't know much about them until now. I don't even remember how I first came across their music, but I really enjoy their style. :guitar:

OLD 55
Thanks Katie. Yes, Smokie and Chris Norman were pretty big here in Australia. We seemed to often take Artists or Groups to heart who didn't do so well elsewhere. Suzi Quatro is a good example of that; we loved her. She had 12 Chart Hits + the duet with Chris Norman. Here's Smokie's Australian Hits: Don't Play Your Rock 'N' Roll To Me #3 1975 Living Next Door To Alice #1 (2 weeks) 1977 Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone #10 1977 It's Your Life #5 1977 Needles And Pins #6 1978 Oh, Carol #4 1978 Mexican Girl #13 1978 Do To Me #16 1979 Stumblin' In #1 (4 weeks - a massive Hit) 1979, Chris Norman & Suzi Quatro Phil, that's a very interesting nomination of Jackie Brenston's Rocket 88 (1951). It's generally considered to be the first Rock And Roll record. Also interesting is Judo's nomination of Pledging My Love by Johnny Ace - one of the greatest R & B songs of all time. Johnny Ace was said to have died while playing Russian Roulette.
