OLD 55
SPECIAL NOTICE: Some time ago we made a general guideline that Nominations would be restricted to "from the start of the Rock Era "(1955) and then relaxed it to '1950 onwards'. Nat King Cole's Unforgettable was originally recorded and hit in 1951. (One nomination of an Ella Fitzgerald song from 1949 did slip through admittedly). Sorry, but I think we'll just have to stick to that rule. As much as I like "the Oldies" I think it just opens up a "can of worms" if we go back before 1950 again. How about we have a separate Pre 1950 Special Top Ten (like the 'Worst Songs' one)sometime ? Please don't take this as personal CanAm (or Judo). I apologise to you CanAm for the lateness of the change and ask you to please submit another song to replace Over The Rainbow, 1939.

I apologise to you CanAm for the lateness of the change and ask you to please submit another song to replace Over The Rainbow, 1939. How about Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version heard here? Pretty sure that was after 1950....

rtstuff
Wow Darryl this is going to be a tough one. A lot of really good tunes on this list. Hey Darryl I saw on the news where the Queensland Zoo lost its oldest member, "Harriet" the Galapagos turtle. I believe they said Harriet was 176 years old and was one of the actual turtles that Darwin studied. Man that is a neat story. rtstuff

Even though I'm not a huge Dylan fan, I will nominate the one song of his which, for some inexplicable reason, I absolutely love: Lay, Lady Lay - Bob Dylan I like your idea of the Special pre 1950 top ten idea. As I age (gracefully, of course) I find myself rediscovering the magic of the music my parents loved.
CanAm
1. Mainstreet ~ Bob Seger 2. Smokin' In The Boy's Room ~ Brownsville Station Awesome selections, Shawna!! You'll definitely get my votes for these ones. A belated welcome back!! Your sense of humour and excellent taste in music were missed. I hope you are feeling much better. Hey, this is my 400th post. Does this mean I advance up the marine food chain to a sea slug or something?

OLD 55
Thanks CanAm. I've said it before and I'll say it again; we're very fortunate to have such a great bunch of people here. We'll have that "Pre 50s Classics Top Ten" in the near future, so the rest of us better think up some good ones to top "Over The Rainbow". rt, voting on this Top Ten is going to be very difficult for me, because others (including you) have nominated a few songs that I would normally put at #1 and #2 in my Ten. We saw film of the tortoise (when it was alive) on the TV News last night. The mind boggles when you think it lived for more than two average human lifespans. Steve Irwin was pretty cut up about as it'd been around all of his life, of course.
OLD 55
He's a Big Man, but his version wouldn't trouble Judy's I don't think Ron. It's certainly pleasant though, a Medley, also containing What A Wonderful World.

c_s_1987
Alive ~ Pearl Jam (possibly my favourite Pearl Jam song) Since I see there are a few Pearl Jam fans here, I knew it was only a matter of time before this, definitely one of the greatest songs of the 90s, was nominated. I hope it makes the ten, and it will probably be number 1 on my list. Just as a matter of interest, one of Perth's local radio stations (96fm) has occasional greatest songs of all time countdowns, and Alive usually makes the top ten. My nominations: S.W.L.A.B.R. (She Walks Like A Bearded Rainbow) - Cream Sorrow - Pink Floyd

blind-fitter
1) One Step Beyond - Madness 2) Hong Kong Garden - Siouxsie And The Banshees 3) Lucky Number - Lene Lovich 4) 53rd & 3rd - The Ramones 5) Raspberry Beret - Prince and The Revolution 6) Do You Want To - Franz Ferdinand 7) Dream A Little Dream Of Me - Mama Cass with The Mamas & The Papas 8) Blackberry Way - The Move 9) Lay Lady Lay - Bob Dylan 10) San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers In Your Hair) - Scott McKenzie A bit tricky for me to come up with the full ten this round. Of the last three "Blackberry Way" and "San Francisco" make the cut because they vaguely remind me of good times in my early childhood, before the rot set in... The other gets in, even though I don't particularly care for the song, for its "comedy value": the opening line "Lay lady lay, lay down on my big brass bed", sung in a preposterous voice, has been known to feature in a Fitter seduction-strategy...
