Copycat Bands

Just was thinking about this and wanted to see how many people thought certain bands "copied" or are greatly influenced by others. I had a few.

Dave Matthews Band: O.A.R, Dispatch

Something Corporate: Jack's Mannequin (that's a joke :))

Ok maybe not as many as I thought but hopefully others will have more.

A lot of people say that Interpol are Joy Division copycats. I would say that Interpol's singer is very obviously trying to mimic Ian, but other than that, to me, Interpol just sounds like they're influenced by Joy Division. She Wants Revenge is a funny band, because their singer is copying Interpol, who is copying Joy Division.

New Order is more of a spin-off band, rather than copy-cat; however Ian Curtis would be rolling in his grave.

Why?

(Incidentally, Curtis is actually dead: topped himself, you know. Maybe he could see which way the musical wind was blowing? Either way, there's no need to use the conditional tense here. I suggest "Curtis must be (or even is) turning in his grave..."

Alternatively, I suggest that Curtis, being stone dead, maintains a fairly neutral stance on the fate of his former band-mates. Indeed, he arguably relinquishes any right to comment.)

Yeah I'll admit, it was pretty early when I wrote that rubbish tripe. I didn't mean to offend anyone on a personal note, just blogging & jotting spontaneously.

The original alternative scene from the 80's (J.D./N.O., Depeche Mode, Cure, Siouxie & the Banshees, Bauhaus, etc.) Music that was overlooked & never received the credit it should have. The pioneers of the alternative / punk / garage, etc scene established the moderate underground indie label genre, by maintaining a cult following with modest pub-club-gigs & transversal hype without the aid of media overexposure (MTV, Radio, Billboard, etc.) commercializing their material through the mainstream.

Nirvana received a mass amount of critical acclaim upon their sophomore release of Nevermind, pioneered through the editing skills of Butch Vig (Garbage). They weren't the first Grunge band to burst out of Seattle. Mother-Love-Bone (Pearl Jam), Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Melvins, & the Screaming Trees had all received recording contracts with minor labels during the Autumn of 1988-89. They just happened to get lucky with the help of producers, engineers, switchboard editors, & recording specialists; to help clean up their incoherently written album & make it into a masterpiece.

I would estimate that Paul Butterfield copies Chuck Berry to approximately the extent that an apple copies an orange.

Actually I always thought that apples tried too hard to be likes oranges, first they want to be sweet then they want to be sour. Can't they just make up their mind and just be unique?!

Okay, sorry I've had no sleep...
