Mike
The Spam Song - Songfacts Spam is made by Hormel Foods Corporation. Spam is made of chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat added, salt, water, sugar and sodium nitrite. Introduced in 1937, the name "Spam" was chosen when the product, whose original name—"Hormel Spiced Ham"—was far less memorable, began to lose slip in popularity. The name was chosen from multiple entries in a naming contest. A Hormel official once stated that the original meaning of the name SPAM was "Shoulder of Pork and hAM". The truth however is that George Savoy is the creater of the acronym SPAM, meaning Spiced Pork and hAM, but the credit goes to Kenneth Daigneau. The current official explanation is that the name is derived from "SPiced hAM", and that the originator was given a $100 prize for coming up with the name. The Show M*A*S*H had a few episodes where they were making fun of the SPAM product SPAM has become an American legend in its own right. *Internet (email) the term has also become slang for sending/receiving bulk unsolicited email.
