"Crying" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" are songs that make me sad... :(

Ah, but two of the Greatest Songs of the Rock Era. About 14 months ago I started a thread about Rolling Stone Magazine's "Top 500". I was ambitious enough to attempt my own 500 and here's how far I got, cut and pasted from the thread. (I'm a good starter, but not always a good finisher).

That's Excellent Farin. :coolio:

The poor old 80s aren't doing too well ! I'll have to think of a couple of goodies. Maybe I'll nominate Billie Jean and get all those MJ fans who were around a few weeks ago back to vote. Or were they invited to Neverland ?

:afro:

Or if Judo nominates Leo Sayer's 1980 version of More Than I Can Say I'll vote for it !

Dear Edna, I thought we might have another Beatle/Stone Free Ten again next one, #9, and then "open slather" for #10. You know you'll get my 10 Points for She Loves You. I won't nominate Hello, Goodbye at the the same time.

Someone said to me the other day "what if I want to nominate White Christmas ? That's before 1950 !" and someone else asked me if Country and Gospel qualified.

COULD you all have a quick read of this please ???

With our 'fewer the better' rules policy, we won't set any dates, Country and Gospel are fine, and Rap and Punk. But let's make them songs that you might hear on mainstream radio; not a Classical Ballet/ Opera OR a Country song off the "Hillbilly Half Hour" OR a Gospel song from the "Reverend Getrich's Holy Rollers Hour". (Just a joke). I'll leave it to your good judgement.

Hi Katie. :)

It's not weekly anymore, or we'd be into June by now !

A Christmas Top Ten is a great idea. Please remind me in December.

One of the ladies suggested a Topical Ten occasionally.

I forget who, sorry, but I do remember that she was gorgeous.

Thanks Edna, but I'm not nominating any Beatles or Stones songs yet. Others have previously nominated two of my favorites for me, Day Tripper and Paint It Black.

I hope we have this next Top Ten without Beatles/Stones nominations anyway. The one we just had was great variety, wasn't it!

In my estimation, the top tens are consistently older songs because when you look at them in a list, you think to yourself.. Well, how can this song from 1989 possibly be compared to this classic from the 70's? The older songs have that "classic" status in our minds. The newer songs still have a few years to prove themselves.

At least.. That's what I was thinkin. ;)

While I agree with you, Malakin, we also have to keep in mind, that the most popular songs in the list are not any older songs, but mostly from the years 1965 to 1975. On some of our recent lists they were up to 3/4 of the list (as you can find out in the Top Ten Archive).

Now it would be interesting to speculate about the reasons for our preference of these songs. It could be, because they are considered a 'classic'. It could also be that these are the years where arguably the best music was made. Or it could be that this is simply the mussic, were our diverse musical tastes come together.

That's of course just mho. :)

Look out Joe, or I'll tell your Wife you said I was gorgeous.

(He DIDN'T of course, but it would make a good story).

Love your comments Sweet Jane. I thought it was by far the toughest, although I had my Top 2 as soon as they were nominated - by someone else. I finished up putting my own nominations 4th and 5th in my Ten.

:)

Malakin and Farin, I really think the most creative time in "modern" Pop Music was the 60s. The Brill Building writers are the best example. They worked in tiny cubicles (couldn't call them offices really) and competed against each other to see who could write the best songs. Also, look at most Movie Soundtracks in the last 10/15 years and you're bound to find a lot of 60s music.

;)

I THINK WE COULD START TAKING NOMINATIONS FOR TOP TEN #9 NOW !!!
