CCR is an answer to a rock trivia question. The group that had the most number 2 hits that didn't make it to number 1.

rtstuff

Elvis outdid them by 1.

CCR had 5 songs that hit #2, Elvis Presley had 6, but of course, he's a solo artist and not a group.

That was another terrific 10. You know, I nominated Day Tripper, because I think it is one of The Beatles "lost" classics. You don't hear it ever on the radio anymore. It never got huge airplay when it was a new song. That riff is something. It may have been slightly borrowed from the blues. Clapton uses the riff in a Bluesbreakers song that came out around the same time. Who influenced who?

CCR, Gordon Lightfoot, 10 Years After...nice.

I am also very pleased with this top ten. But I think they've all been good. I learn so much from everybody's nominations, as I try to get hold of the songs I don't already know.

I love Heart...pleased to see them making it too :D :D

I don't mind if Beatles and Stones songs get nominated and make the ten every week....just goes to show how many of us like them.

... and that Greenday song has become so commercial now that I can't stand it.

I voted that song high, simply because I really like it. I had never heard it until it was used behind a farewell montage for the Seinfeld TV series. I thought it was a perfect fit. Then later, heard the song a few more times on radio. You may not like Greenday or feel that any song used outside of personal listening is commercial; but as an aspiring lyricist, I can say it is very difficult to start out by saying, "I'm going to write a commercial hit." Most songs have humble personal origins. Where they go from there cannot be controlled by the artist who wrote or sang them. If exposure is the criteria for commercialism, then Queen is an extremely commercial band. A couple of their songs are sung at almost every sporting event in the USA now.

Perhaps this belongs in the Rockism thread. I just realized .... Paul Wagemann has introduced a label to something that Songfactors has been doing for quite awhile. Only we called it communicating.

Another great list!!

Although I didn't vote for I'd Love To Change The World, I'm gratified to see that there are some Ten Years After fans out there. Alvin Lee is one of my favourite artists and I believe one of the greatest rock guitarists. Although I like Ten Years After, I much prefer Lee's solo work.

I was also pleased to see a Gordon Lightfoot tune make the top 10 list. There are several more of his songs that I plan to nominate in the future.

Although I like Heart, I've never much cared for Crazy On You. It's probably because it's one of the few tunes by the group that is played on our local classic rock radio station. I've just heard it a few too many times.

I'll have to try and listen to the song by Green Day. I'm not very familiar with the group.

I guess we're getting some insights on how we each nominate and vote .

Oh , I agree with you , Steel , that it is a lyrically strong tune and has a good melody that successfully generates a feeling of sentiment for things passed /passing . I guess , for me , it is just a case of overexposure . I was referring to how I've seen it is used far too frequently , IMO - almost predictably at times - in everything from commercials for cars to TV dramas , and even the background music to news items or whenever they want to stir up said emotion . I guess it's become a modern anthem for that particular feeling as much as the Queen songs inevitably will appear for sports victories or rally cries - leading me to lose interest in those songs as well .

On a side note , " My City Was Gone " ( great tune ) by the Pretenders is also a more difficult listen as it has become so strongly associated with Rush Limbaugh now ... :)

I've just been sending the nominations standings off to our ARCHIVIST, FarinU. He'll research them in his usual thorough way, but here's a short breakdown on the "Yearly Percentages" of our Top Ten (rounded to nearest %).

1950s.....3%

1960s....41%

1970s....44%

1980s.....6%

1990s.....4%

2000s.....2%

.................................................

So far we've had all Groups at #1 in our Top Tens:

The Beatles 2

The Rolling Stones 1 1/2

The Knack 1

Pink Floyd 1

Deep Purple 1

Simon And Garfunkel 1/2

.................................................

Personally, I'd really like to see some different Artists at #1. How about you ? I think we all know that if a half decent Beatles or Stones song is nominated, it'll probably make #1. Also, I believe that multiple nominations for the same Artist/s split their votes !

I'm just expressing some opinions, and I won't be at all "put out" if you disagree. It's OUR Top Ten. Nominate what you like !

Anyway I think we might declare NOMINATIONS FOR TOP TEN #8 OPEN.

I know Shawna is rearing to go with a couple. :)

I'm gonna submit my nominations for the next one now, because I just remembered about an old favorite song and I want to nominate it before I forget about it again!

Your Mama Don't Dance ~ Loggins and Messina

and

My Kinda Lover ~ Billy Squier

Thanks bluesboy and Shawna ! :)

And Phil ! Hi Mate. :)

Beautiful, Darryl... just beautiful...

I think I would vote for most of CCR songs, they have some "perfect" albums... not a bad tune. "Day tripper" deserves a first place... it's not one of my fave Beatles' songs but as everything they did, it's also... perfect.

Now, I have so many great songs in my mind... let's see...

- Sultans of Swing - Dire Straits

- No Milk Today - Herman's Hermits

Hi Edna ! I think you have a couple of vote catchers there.

I've been in touch with Judo via PTs and the Bellamy Brothers' version of "If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body" is the one nominated.

It already looks like another TOUGH Top Ten. :)

Hi Katie. MORE Vote Catchers !!!

No, Radar Love hasn't been used before. That wouldn't matter anyway unless it made one of our Top Tens.

I know this will sound like a story, but last night before bed I was going through A in my U.S. Pop Hits Book index,(or was it D in the Artists) and I thought "I'll make Abraham, Martin And John - Dion and ATLANTIS - Donovan my nominations". Come today and I'd forgotten them !

I can see me voting for ones other than my nominations again. I have the last few Top Tens.

:)

AND now Angel puts on another of my favorites, Thin Lizzy's The Boys Are Back In Town ! I'm going to bed before my brain explodes. I've got more than Ten already.

:P
