We didn't even have bike sheds at our college! I used to go into the toilet for a smoke. What else could you do behind bike sheds in an all boys school anyway?

Earth-Angel started all of it with this post:

Wow, I feel like I was caught out behind the bike sheds doing something naughty! :P

You'll have to ask her. It must have been only moderately naughty though.

Because she's a Moderator.

Thanks to all 25 who nominated and voted. :)

I keep a running total of the points as the votes come in, and this Top Ten has been absolutely fascinating. The prospective Top Ten just kept changing.

There's a TIE for first. When 2 songs are on equal points I favour the one which MOST people voted for; 14 people each voted for these two; Paint It Black scored two top votes, compared to Mrs. Robinson, which had only one.

The third song was only 3 points behind them.

Then 4, 5 and 6 had only 1 point between each of them.

Also two Artists /Acts have two songs each in the Top Ten.

There's nothing wrong with that of course, but I'm suggesting that multiple nominations of the same Artist/s could "split" their votes. It may be something to consider when nominating for future Top Tens.

Anyway, without further ado, I'm pleased to announce...

Yes I think we all enjoy it Edna. :)

This is a good Top Ten which probably shows our general favorite "time span"; our choices range over a period of only 7 years, 1966 to 1972. I'm sure our Archivist, Farin, already has this worked out, but the first five songs were all 60s, and the second five all 70s !

Welcome Judo. It's great to have you join us. A couple of Country oriented songs there from you for our next nominations list (which we'll officially start in about 15 hours).

Always liked Eddie Rabbitt after he wrote one of my favorite Elvis songs Kentucky Rain.

And Del Shannon's Runaway is of course a timeless classic.

Another great list

I think 90% of our Top Tens are out of the 60's or 70's with maybe the odd 90's song thrown in. That's just what almost everyone here considers the best music. Some may vote also for 80's songs, some for 50's, but everyone has at least three or four out of these decades.

Yeah, where is Farin?...Sleeping? I expected these numbers to be crunched already. they've been up for hours.......just kidding.

I'm pleasantly shocked by God Only Knows at number three. It is not in the classic Beach Boys style, but it stands up as a solid song. I heard Carl Wilson do an interview once and he was gushing over the fact that Brian honored him by letting him sing lead vocals on God Only Knows. Carl felt it was the ultimate song for him.

Nice list again...and nice work everybody.

Angel, I know that but look what some of these others are saying. I think you've stirred up some guilty feelings amongst them. What were they doing behind the bicycle sheds ???

You might have to start a "Dear Angel" thread so they can share their experiences with you. ;)

I never recognize Farin's new avatar either ! ;)

Hi Farin and RonJon.

God Only Knows is a beautiful song RJ. I shouldn't say this, but I was secretly hoping it might be #1. That's the one which Paul McCartney said he wished he'd written, isn't it ?

And Farin, I would nominate more 50s songs but not many would know them. I grew up on Bill Haley, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, ELVIS ETC. It all started for me when I saw the movie "Blackboard Jungle" with Rock Around The Clock played in it. The movie had a 16 years + age restriction, but I was a big 14 year old.

The Wind Cries Mary - Jimi Hendrix

After all the jacks are in their boxes

And the clowns have all gone to bed

You can hear happiness staggering on down the street

Footsteps dressed in red

And the wind whispers mary

A broom is drearily sweeping

Up the broken pieces of yesterdays life

Somewhere a queen is weeping

Somewhere a king has no wife

And the wind, it cries mary

The traffic lights, they turn, uh, blue tomorrow

And shine their emptiness down on my bed

The tiny island sags down stream

'cause the life that lived is,

Is dead

And the wind screams mary

Uh-will the wind ever remember

The names it has blow in the past?

And with this crutch, its old age, and its wisdom

It whispers no, this will be the last

And the wind cries mary

great top ten Darryl! Great work too. You know strangely this was actually the easiest for me so far. Maybe so many songs nominated from the same bands?

anyway the songs are defiantely top ten material. I don't mind when mine don't make it, cause the ones that did, were probably unwillingly cut from my list!!

So many of mine just come off the top of my head. If I really think, bet I can come up with some 50"s!
