Hmmm, not much participation for this quiz. :(

Don't be shy, give it a try!

Don't let the Irish girl's answers stop you from participating.

She didn't get them all correct, and now Peaches and Katie have to settle for the same score as Gisela because they thought she would ace the quiz.

I won't tell you which ones she got wrong, but you have a good chance to be the winner.

Post your guesses, and maybe you will win a prize!

I'll extend the deadline until tomorrow.

Wow! This has got to be the worst turn out for participants since they asked for volunteers to stay on the island in the movie 'Arachnid'.

Anyways, thanks to those who took the quiz.

Here are your scores, the answers and some info.

5/8 SoulGirl

5/8 Peaches

5/8 Katie

5/8 Farin

5/8 Laurie

4/8 CC

3/8 Levis

Correct answers:

1. b. The ice age

Ireland's geographic seperation, caused in part by the ice age, prevented snakes from reaching the island.

(Notice that the question asked for the most likely explanation and not the legend).

2. a. Foreign soldiers

Irish soldiers in the British military paraded in the streets of New York, March 17, 1762.

3. d. He used it to teach Christianity

When preaching, Patrick used the clover's three leaves as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity

4. b. A daily aspirin

The beer's antioxidants can help reduce cholesterol deposits in arteries, thus lowering the risk of heart attacks.

5. c. It was associated with fairies

It was believed that green was the fairies' favorite color. Wearing too much green could tempt them to kidnap you.

6. c. 1.9 billion

The popular Irish beer was first brewed in 1759.

7. a. Chicago, IL

The Chicago River was first dyed green in 1962. Today, the city uses 40 pounds of dye and the river is green for hours.

8. b. pubs

Pubs were forced to close because St. Patrick's Day was a national religious holiday.

the ice age, of course! i knew the legend wasn't 'likely' but i didn't possess the brainpower for lateral thinking, to the extent that i would hone in on ireland's island status as the reason for there being no snakes!

don't know anything about the NY celebrations of Paddy's Day and a daily aspirin is only good for your heart if you have a heart condition!!!

i knew i wouldn't ace it, i'm rubbish at general knowledge!

good quiz though, brad - thanks for honouring our day with it!

That's false, Gisela.

Although aspirin lowers the risk of heart attacks in most people with heart conditions, it also helps those who have no heart condition.

My doctor has me on a daily aspirin, 81 mg dosage because of my cholesterol level.

Aspirin in low doses prevents blood clots in your arteries.

It causes the platelets to lose their stickiness and helps prevent clumping together to form a clot.

i read an article a few years back about this drug that was ridiculously dangerous. it was basically a big long list of all the faults, problems and negative side effects of this drug. it compared the drug to rat poison. this went on for about thousand words and when you turned the page the drug was... aspirin! it said that if aspirin were to go through the approval methods today it would never be available over the counter but it's too commonly used now for them to be able to change it.

i've heard about aspirin being recommended to people but usually if they have some sort of health problem to begin with. i went for 'a brisk walk' because that's good for everyone whereas 'a daily aspirin' is not recommended to everyone! incidentally, doctors used to recommend pregnant women to drink a glass of guinness everyday because it's a good source of iron!

Aspirin may be harmful in large doses and for some people in smaller doses, but it is helpful for many people.

It has been clinically proven to be helpful and detrimental to different people.

It is your doctor's responsibility to determine if it will help or harm you.

My doctor prescribed for me 81mg dosage which is way below the normal 325 mg of a regular dosage tablet.
