Batman
I should mention, this was only effective for a short while, and not in all places.
miamisammy29
Wow! Is that for real, Batman? Somber...yet funny in a way, seeing that about 90% of those songs have no relationship to the event whatsoever.
daslied
Sammy! I believe that list is for real. I remember being appalled at the choices. But Clear Channel knows best...
Skuff
For exmple: She's A Woman~The Beatles "Turns me on when I get lonley" Well now, they'd play songs that have "Turn Me On" in the title!(If there are any!)
TheTallOne
Why after 9/11? I'm probably missing something.
Batman
Well, I don't think it was a thing where the FCC said "don't play these songs" I think it was just that people in the US (New York, mainly) were depressed about the whole event, and didn't want to listen to "depressing" music, which much of that list is (most of them deal with death). So the radios didn't play what listeners didn't want to hear.
SoulGirl
it's crazy though - many of the songs just have vague references to death! death is part of life, there's no point in sticking your head in the sand and trying to hide from reality! i can understand a few of the songs, even if i don't agree with the whole concept, but 'killer queen'?! daslied
The Beatles "Obla Di, Obla Da" - can't figure that one out. Alanis’ “Ironic†has a plane crash reference. “Dancing In The Streets†could be referencing the videos of some Muslims celebrating the attacks. Everything else seems to be in some way referencing death, crashes, planes, missing people, jumping, falling and destruction. But 90% of them aren't obvious - people wouldn't think that way of these songs unless it was pointed out. The ones that really get me are "Imagine" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" - two classic songs of comfort. I can maybe see "Imagine", since it talks about religion. But still... Skuff
Ok, another one: Medicine Jar~Wings. "What's wrong with you? I wish I knew You say time and tell I hope that's true There's more to life than blues and reds I say, I know how you feel, Now your friends are dead. Dead on your feet, you won't get far If you keep on sticking your hand In the medicine jar. Now don't give up Whatever you do You say time will tell I hope that's true If you go down and lose your head I say, I know how you feel Now your friends are dead. Dead on your feet, you won't get far If you keep on sticking your hand In the medicine jar. Dead on your feet What can I do? I can't let go You say time will heal But very slow So don't forget the things you said I say I know how you feel Now your friends are dead. Dead on your feet, you won't get far If you keep on sticking your hand In the medicine jar." (McCulloch) It's an anti-drug song.
