jman14141414
I'm ashamed to say, that I haven't heard any of his albums or know much about him at all. So, what are some good albums to get and some random info about him.
arachnidoc
Don't be ashamed. Five seconds of the "Rebel, rebel" video, and I was pretty much done with David Bowie.
NewYorkMets9
Try never to look at David Bowie. Too much of that and it ruins his music.

RonJonSurfer
David Bowie is one of the most prolific and inventive musicians in the history of Rock and Roll...countless bands followed his musical leads as he constantly broke new ground with his songs. Bowie is one of the rockers with true staying power. His career spans nearly 40 years from his early days as a pop musician in England, through hard rock (The Man Who Sold The World is one of the earliest and heaviest rock albums you'll ever hear), through dance music, through, well, hopefully you get the idea. Search Songfacts for the favorite Bowie album posts (pretty recent) and you'll get a ton of recommendations.
katie_sane
I LOVE Bowie, as my avatar would suggest Bowie is the king of reinvention. He's been so many different characters and people. As RonJon said, he is one of the few musicians with staying power. I love him and his music more than I can explain, he's just so good at what he does. I like songs and albums from each period/transformation of his career. PSYCHOcatholic
Bowie is his own music...he is his own genre...in stores they should have rock/pop/rap/classical/Bowie... Hes amazing! And...hes not a bad actor!
Uncle Joe
Furhermore, his stage performances and videos are highly creative and artistic bordering on genius. Look further and you'll see that for yourselves.
Jenny
If you want to, start with the "Best of Bowie" CD. It's a sampler of his work over the years, and it's one of my favorites. Didn't he also have a side project called Tin Machine? It was a '90's band and they were on the harder rock edge, I think.
redtelephone
Tin machine was definitely a low point for him. It's truely generic stuff, completely uninteresting, but maybe you could argue that it's better than a lot of his 80s catalogue. I think "Scary Monsters" was Bowie's last great album. Ashes to Ashes and Fashion are top notch.

Mark
I like everything David Bowie has done but my favorite Bowie album is his 1980 (maybe 1979) release "Scary Monsters". With this album Bowie experiments with New Wave sounds such as the classic "Fashion" and "Ashes To Ashes". Other great songs are "Up The Hill Backwards" and "Scary Monsters". Excellent album. Life can be easy it's not always well Don't tell me truth hurts little girl 'cause it hurts like hell. But down in the underground you'll find someone true Down in the underground a land serene and crystal. It's only forever not long at all Lost and lonely - that's underground underground! Endymion1977
Please do yourself a favour and DON'T get a "Best of Bowie" CD. "The rise and fall..." is of course his classic, so you definitely need it. If you like it, you might also get his best album - "Hunky Dory", and "Scary Monsters".
