Farin
That´s "where have all the flowers gone"... I don´t find it so sad... Well, the version that I know best (by Marlene Dietrich) is very melancholy. Maybe it's the voice... That makes me think of "Lilli Marleen", does anyone of you know this song? edna
You don't find "Where Have All The Flowers Gone?" sad? Edna, I never had you down as some kind of heartless automaton! It's all about millions of men (and boys) being killed in pointless wars. How much sadder can things get? You´re right there, I guess... I was thinking more of songs like "Tell laura I love her", or "Alone again, naturally". Songs somehow very stupid... These songs have a deepest sadness, like "In the Ghetto"...
I meant that it's sometimes a little bit frustrating, because I know so many wonderful songs and talented artists, that I can't share with you, because they don't speak English. I hope I clarified that... I know plenty of wonderful French songs too... Gainsbourg, Brassens, Polnareff, Piaf, Renaud, Brel, Daho... There was a thread somewhere when we discussed foreign music... Red Fish
While it didn't flat-out make me cry, this song sorta struck a cord with me. The third verse especially. Mark Schultz - I Have Been There In a room without a view A new mother smiles and holds the tiny fingers Of her brand new baby girl Her husband takes her by the hand So unsure about the future and no money Can they make it in this world And they pray, Lord all we have to give is love Then they heard a gentle voice Like an echo from above [chorus] Oh I have been there I know what fear is all about Yes, I have been there And I am standing with you now I have been there And I came to build a bridge oh so this road could Lead you home Oh I have been there [/chorus] He’d been a pastor twenty years But tonight he sits alone and brokenhearted In the corner of the church He’s tried to change a fallen world With his words and with his wisdom But it seems like it is only getting worse And he cries Oh Lord I just don’t understand And then he felt the hand of grace, And he heard a voice that said [chorus] I have been there I know what pain is all about Yes, I have been there And I am standing with you now I have been there And I came to build to a bridge oh so This road could lead you home Oh I have been there [/chorus] An older man up on a hill Holding flowers but he can’t hold back the tears He has come to say goodbye He thinks about the life she lived Thinks about how hard it’s been To live without her Sixty years right by his side And he cries, Oh Lord I loved her ‘til the end Then he heard a gentle voice say you’ll see her once again [chorus] I have been there I know what sorrow is all about Yes, I have been there And I am standing with you now I have been there And I came to build a bridge Oh so this road could lead her home The road could lead her home Oh I have been there [/chorus] You know I overcame the cross I have been there So her life would not be lost I have been there And I came to build a bridge Oh so this road could lead you home The road could lead you home Oh I have been there
Levis
I have dedicated prose to this song because I love it so much... even though it doesn't make me cry exactly. Dance in Your Shadow - Kula Shaker If you were alone, No one would know that you were crying If you were a dream, Nothing would seem high or low Lie under the stars, Cradle your arms like you were dying Oh..what would you do if it was true No one was lying Time wait by your side, Dance in your shadow Time wait by your side, Dance in your shadow Love treasure the time, That you are mine and I am found Oh..what would you do, If it was true, if you were flying Time wait by your side, Dance in your shadow Time wait by your side, Dance in your shadow
FENWAYFRANK
Slip Sliding Away - Paul Simon "And I know a Father who had son he longed to tell him the reasons for all things he'd done He came a long way just to explain he kissed his boy as he lay sleeping then he turned around and headed home again"
Farin
Dead of Winter ~ Eels Standing in the dark outside the house Breathing in the cold and sterile air Well I was thinking how it must feel To see that little light And watch it as it disappears And fades into And fades into the night So I know you're going pretty soon Radiation sore throat got your tongue Magic markers tattoo you And show it where to aim And strangers break their promises You won't feel any You won't feel any pain And the streets are jammed with cars Rockin' their horns To race to the wire Of the unfinished line Thought that I'd forget all about the past But it doesn't let me run too fast And I just wanna stand outside And know that this is right And this is true And I will not Fade into Fade into the night Standing here in the dark Actually the whole "Electro-Shock Blues" album is pretty depressing... Farin
Sorry Shawna, here's another one: Last Kiss ~ Pearl Jam (it's a cover version, but I keep forgetting who did the original) Oh, where oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good So I can see my baby when I leave this world. We were out on a date in my daddy's car We hadn't driven very far There in the road, up straight ahead A car was stalled, the engine was dead I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right I'll never forget the sound that night The screamin' tires, the bustin' glass The painful scream that I heard last. Oh, where oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good So I can see my baby when I leave this world. When I woke up, the rain was pourin' down There were people standing all around Something warm rollin' through my eyes But somehow I found my baby that night I lifted her head, she looked at me and said "Hold me darling just a little while." I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss I found the love that I knew I would miss But now she's gone, even though I hold her tight I lost my love, my life that night. Oh, where oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good So I can see my baby when I leave this world. johnnyguitar
Well, I've finally worked out after 20 odd years, the chords to this song...and it's one of the saddest songs I know...allusive, oblique, beautiful...none of this heart twanging country crap...it makes you work out for yourself what it means...doesn't lay it out on a plate...and it's definitely about a death foretold...enjoy! Pink Moon (Nick Drake) I saw it written and I saw it said- pink moon is on its way. None of you stand so tall, pink moon gonna get ye all and it's a pink moon, yeah, pink moon. Pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon. Pink, pink, pink, pink, pink moon. I saw it written and I saw it said- pink moon is on its way. None of you stand so tall, pink moon gonna get ye all and it's a pink moon, yeah, pink moon. It's definitely a 'ye' not a 'you'....all adds to the mystery! Dappled
The saddest song I know is Life Fades Away sung by Roy Orbison: My time has come, the clouds are calling December wind has come my way And now I feel the will falling All at once it's too late Life fades away The night is my wake All thoughts slip away And even though I must leave you Remember I love you I'll always be in your memory And I will always be with you when I'm gone Fade, life fades away Oh yea, yea, yea, yea Life fades away I'm tired of tomorrow Lost for today I long to be At peace forever My eternity And even though I will miss you I must leave you Fade, life fades away Oh yea, yea, yea, yea Life fades away So please forgive me And try not to cry I long to be at peace forever more Forever more Oh yea, yea, yea, yea Yea, yea, yea, yea, yea Yea, yea, yea, yea, yea Life fades away Life fades away Life fades away Away One last thing to say Life fades away
daslied
This one haunts me, since Johnny died shortly after it came out - in September. "September When It Comes" - Rosanne Cash & Johnny Cash There's a cross above the baby's bed, A Saviour in her dreams. But she was not delivered then, And the baby became me. There's a light inside the darkened room, A footstep on the stair. A door that I forever close, To leave those memories there. So when the shadows link them, Into an evening sun. Well first there's summer, then I'll let you in. September when it comes. I plan to crawl outside these walls, Close my eyes and see. And fall into the heart and arms, Of those who wait for me. I cannot move a mountain now; I can no longer run. I cannot be who I was then: In a way, I never was. I watch the clouds go sailing; I watch the clock and sun. Oh, I watch myself, depending on, September when it comes. So when the shadows link them, And burn away the clouds. They will fly me, like an angel, To a place where I can rest. When this begins, I'll let you know, September when it comes.
