bluesboy
The real magic of this debut album (release 1970) from the Jefferson Airplane's lead guitar and bass player is the interplay between Jorma Kaukonen on Acoustic Guitar and Jack Casady on Electric Bass. They've played together forever and it shows on the solos, as each instrument weaves and builds solos around each other. The set list is mostly old folk-blues selections with a few originals thrown in. Traditional songs like: Hesitation Blues Know Your Rider and the very topical for the Vietnam War Era Uncle Sam Blues by Unknown Got my questionnaire baby You know I'm headed off for war I got my questionnaire baby You know I'm headed off for war Well, now I'm gonna do some fightin' Well, no one knows what for Well, Uncle Sam ain't no woman You know he sure can take your man Said Uncle Sam ain't no woman You know he sure can take your man Well, there's 40,000 guys in the service list Doin' somethin' somewhere they just don't understand Well, I'm gonna do some fightin' Of that I can be sure Said I'm gonna do some fightin' Of that I can be sure Well, now I want to kill somebody Won't have to break no kind of law I got my questionnaire baby You know I'm headed off for war I got my questionnaire baby You know I'm headed off for war Well, I want to kill somebody Won't have to break no kind of law also, Rev. Gary Davis' - Death Don't Have No Mercy and Oh Lord, Search My Heart Leroy Carr's - How Long Blues Jelly Roll Morton's - Winin' Boy Blues and Don't You Leave Me Here This album is recorded live in a coffeehouse setting. Even after 35 years of listening, I still find the songs fresh and new. I remember I had to buy this album twice as an album, twice as a cassette because I wore them out listening to it so much.
