MarcM
I love You California Written by F. B. Silverwood Composed by A. F. Frankenstein I love you, California, you're the greatest state of all I love you in the winter, summer, spring, and in the fall. I love your fertile valleys; your dear mountains I adore, I love your grand old ocean and I love her rugged shore. chorus I love your redwood forests - love your fields of yellow grain, I love your summer breezes, and I love your winter rain, I love you, land of flowers; land of honey, fruit and wine, I love you, California; you have won this heart of mine. chorus I love your old gray Missions - love your vineyards streteching far, I love you, California, with your Golden Gate ajar, I love your purple sunsets, love your skies of azure blue, I love you, California; I just can't help loving you. chorus I love you, Catalina - you are very dear to me, I love you, Tamalpais, and I love Yosemite, I love you, Land of Sunshine, half your beauties are untold, I loved you in my childhood, and I'll love you when I'm old. chorus When the snow crowned Golden Sierras Keep their watch o'er the valleys bloom. It is there I would be in our land by the sea, Ev'ry breeze bearing rich perfume, It is here nature gives of her rarest, It is Home Sweet Home to me. And I know when I die I shall breathe my last sigh For my sunny California. Oh brother......
Uncle Joe
When I was in grade school we sung the school song titled "McDaniel School, Our halls Of Learning". Not until Jr. High School did I discover that the McDaniel School Song was sung to the tune of "Deutchland Ubber Alles" which was the German National Anthem under Hitler and the Nazis. It's a wonder they didn't make us goose step to the school parade. Zieg Heil kiddies!

Ken
The Great Lakes Song - Pat Dailey The Great Lakes are a diamond on the hand of North America A brightly shining jewel on the friendship bordering, Freshwater highway coming down from Canada All along the shoreline, you can hear them sing singin' Sweet mother Michigan, father Superior Coming down from Mackinac and Sault St. Marie Blue water Huron, Flow down to Lake Erie-O Fall to Ontario and run on out to sea. Hearty are the seamen on the ships that load the iron ore Sailing out of Thunder Bay and bound for Buffalo Hearty are the fishermen just like their Fathers were before Say they'll bury me at sea, come my time to go, Singin' Sweet mother Michigan, Father Superior Coming down from Mackinac and Sault St. Marie Blue water Huron, Flow down to Lake Erie-O Fall to Ontario and run on out to Sea. Oh the tales the sailors spin, of mermaids singing in the wind, the sinking of the Bessemer, the drowning of the crew. Memories of waters crossed of women won and fortunes lost Are etched upon their faces and their faded old tatoos Down below the quarter decks the old men mend the fishing nets Up above the windy bridge, the young men curse into the wind All along the Windsor straits, the wives and mothers lie awake Pray Our Lady of the Lake, to send them home again, singin', Sweet mother Michigan, Father Superior Coming down from Mackinac and Sault St. Marie Blue water Huron, Flow down to Lake Erie-O Fall to Ontario and run on out to Sea, run on out to Sea..... Kevin
I'm not at all completely certain of this , Joe , but I believe that is still the national anthem of Germany ( or perhaps just the melody ? ) . Anyway , it has not been eradicated, I think , as almost all other things of that period have been . I don' t believe it was written speciffically for the Nazis ( Marc , Katie ? Anyone know offhand ? ), though one would certainly think so from the title , and it was used then , as well . Japan has a similar situation : Pre-war national anthem maintained , insinuating high respect for the Emperor , and a source of controversy constantly as people wish to change it , or refuse to sing/ stand for it , etc. ======= update : Still is the official anthem , though only the 3rd verse is sung -- the first being verboten ! Written 1841 , with the initial intention of the meaning being for Germans to drop their regional loyalties and embrace Germany as a whole . Germany did not become a nation state until 1871 , previously being composed of numerious little kingdoms , principalities , dukedoms etc. Edited October 19, 2005 by Guest Checking that I'm not full of B.S... Don´t you think they should change it and have some Kraftwerk song instead?
Kevin
Thanks , edna . My source said it WAS banned briefly during the Allied occupation in'45 , but perhaps The Cold War and demobilization partly allowed it to reappear . Anyway , back to Joe's story : Isn't it cute thought to think of Uncle Joe singing and marching around to that dressed in a pair of liederhosen ? Ringing out from out blue heavens, From our deep seas breaking round; Over everlasting mountains Where the echoing crags resound; From our plains where creaking wagons Cut their trails into the earth Calls the spirit of our Country, Of the land that gave us birth. At thy call we shall not falter, Firm and steadfast we shall stand. At thy will to live or perish, O South Africa, dear land. In our body and our spirit, In our inmost heart held fast; In the promise of our future and the glory of our past; In our will, our work, our striving, From the cradle to the grave - There's no land that shares our loving, And no bond that can enslave. Thou hast borne us and we know thee. May our deeds to all proclaim Our enduring love and service To thy honour and thy name. In the golden warmth of summer, In the chill of winter's air, In the surging life of springtime, In the autumn of despair; When the wedding bells are chiming, Or when those we love depart, Thou dost know us for thy children And dost take us to thy heart. Loudly peals the answering chorus; We are thine, and we shall stand, Be it life or death, to answer Thy call, beloved land. In thy power Almighty, trusting, Did our fathers build of old; Strengthen then, O Lord, their children To defend, to love, to hold That the heritage they gave us For our children yet may be: Bondsmen only to the Highest And before the whole world free. As our fathers trusted humbly, Teach us, Lord, to trust Thee still: Guard our land and guide our people In Thy way to do Thy will.

lonelyday
The NZ national anthem is pretty basic, there are like 3 verses in english that I get mixed up. I know the maori though, even though all I can really do in maori is say hello, count to 100 and say a few random body parts and other words thanks to the songs we used to sing in primary school. The maori version sounds very poetic.
Otokichi
Melody by a Prussian bandmaster, lyrics written by a King, this national anthem is now the official song of the state of Hawai'i. First verse: Hawai'i Pono'i (Hawaii's own) Nana i kou mo'i (Be loyal to your chief) Ka lani ali'i (Your conutry's liege and lord) Ke ali'i (The ali'i) Chorus/hui: Makua lani e (Father above us all) Kamehameha e (Kamehameha) Na kaua a pale (Who guarded in war Me ka ihe (With his spear) second verse: Hawai'i Pono'i Nana i na ali'i (Look to your lineal chiefs) Na pua muli kou (These chiefs of latter birth) Na poki'i (Younger siblings) third verse: Hawai'i Pono'i E ka lahui e (People of loyal hearts) 'O kau hana nui (Thy only duty lies) E ui e (Listen and abide) These days, most sing only the first verse and the chorus before the band strikes up "The Star-Spangled Banner." By the way, did anyone notice that this song ends with a question? This song, set to the tune, "Anacreon on Heaven" (in?) reminds citizens that without some vigilance, the flag/nation may no longer be.
