Lori
Hi guys.... I'm racking my brain trying to figure out the answer to this. My husband came up with some music trivia that he challenged me on and now I have to come up with the answer. Does ANYONE know....... What 2 top 40 songs were the 1st to use the word "Hippies"? There were 2 groups that recorded these songs and they came from the same city. He asked me if I knew which city these 2 groups are from (or started) These groups are from the same city. If anyone has any clues that they can send me it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Sincerely, Lori So. Calif
Mike
Well I thought, Chad Romero's "Hippy hippy shake", that was 1959, was the first top 40 to contain such lyics (hippy that is). He was born in Billings, Mt. though? So I have no idea who #2 would be --- assuming I am correct in him being the first.
jippers
I doubt if Hendrix's "If 6 Was 9" made the top 40, did it? If not, that is definitely a contender. I was also thinking of "Signs" by the Five Man Electrical Band but then the lyric doesn't say the word "hippies", it only describes them as "long haired freaky people". Crazy Don
I know that the Orlons had a hit in 1963 with a song called "South Street," which begins? Where do all the hippies meet? South Street, South Street Where the dancing is elite South Street, South Street?
Lori
Thanks for the replies guys! Crazy Don your post is what clenched it. I had found out about the Orlons and you confirmed it. It was the Orlons "South Street" and the Dovells "You Can't Sit Down." Both groups were from Philadelphia. Both songs also, have South Street in the words.
