Signature Songs

Recommended Posts

Our local radio station conducted a survey which asked respondents to name the one song which they felt best defined each of the following musical groups:

The Beatles -Hey Jude (Let It Be)

The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction (Honky Tonk Woman)

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven (Stairway To Heaven)

Bob Seger - Night Moves (Old Time Rock & Roll)

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (The Wall)

Rod Stewart - Maggie May (Maggie May)

The Eagles - Hotel California (One Of These Nights)

Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon (Go Your Own Way)

The Who - My Generation (Won't Get Fooled Again)

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird (Sweet Home Alabama)

The songs immediately after the group names were selected by a majority of respondents as the songs that best defined each group's style. My selections are in parentheses.

Do you agree with these selections? If not, what songs would you select in their place? Remember, you are not being asked to choose your favourite songs by these groups, but rather what you think is each group's signature tune.

It's too hard to choose one, but for my favorite artists, I'll choose about 2 or 3 for most of them...by the way, these aren't necessarily my favorite songs by each group

Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Little Wing, All Along the Watchtower

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven, Immigrant Song, Black Dog

Pink Floyd - Time, Echoes, Breathe

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody, Father To Son, March of the Black Queen

AC/DC - any song

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath, Iron Man, War Pigs

Rush - Tom Sawyer, 2112, Limelight

and not necessarily in my top 10 bands, but the song that defines Funkadelic is "Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!"

The Who - Behind Blue Eyes (This one is by The Who, right?)

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama

I guess I'm just not normal. :googly:

The Beatles -Hey Jude (Let It Be)

Hard to pin the Beatles down to one song, since they evolved so much in their 8 year run of brilliance. Plus, they should get one song each for Paul and John. So I'd add Love Me Do, just to represent John & the early period. Plus I think the lyrics are brilliant.

The Rolling Stones - Satisfaction (Honky Tonk Woman)

Led Zeppelin - Stairway To Heaven (Stairway To Heaven)

I like Black Dog better as a signature song. Zeppelin was all about stealing blues riffs, and that one even got 'em sued!

Bob Seger - Night Moves (Old Time Rock & Roll)

Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon (The Wall)

OK, hang on, did you not say signature SONGS? These are ALBUMS! What's that about? At least choose one track as a signature. Besides which, I'm going to throw out Bike as the signature song of Syd Barrett-era Floyd, with Money probably best representing post-Barrett.

Rod Stewart - Maggie May (Maggie May)

I have to agree this was his signature tune until he went all disco on us. Now, of course, it would be "Night and Day" or some old jazz chestnut like that.... :-)

The Eagles - Hotel California (One Of These Nights)

Fleetwood Mac - Rhiannon (Go Your Own Way)

This surprises me a little. I guess I think of Rumors as such a definitive album for Fleetwood Mac, I would have expected one of the songs from there to get the nod. Personally, I absolutely love "Bleed to Love Her", but that really only represents Lindsay, not the whole band.

The Who - My Generation (Won't Get Fooled Again)

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird (Sweet Home Alabama)

As much as I'd love to mention any number of more interesting Who songs, I think the 2 choices above work best. As for Skynyrd, ditto.

Beatles - She loves you (mine is "In my life"... in case I could choose because I would choose them all)

Stones- Brown Sugar . No fave one but fave 500.

Led Zep - Been a long time

Then I agree for them all, only The Who would be "Tommy" and LS, "Sweet Home Alabama".

Disagree all you like, it isn't my favourite Pink Floyd song. It was just my opinion. I disagree with your choices for Pink Floyd. I thought a signature tune was one that a band became renowned for (i.e. a HUGE hit). A song that people who aren't even fans of that band or particularly knowledgeable about music know.

Oh, well if that's the definition of a signature tune, then yes, I'd agree with you. I was thinking more of songs that defined the band's musical style.

My own list of "signature" songs isn't really the song that "defines" a group or artist's sound, but rather the first song that comes to mind when I hear/read the name.

Fleetwood Mac for instance, doesn't really have a sound per se, especially considering they started out as a British blues band. Speaking in terms of the McVie/Buckingham/Nicks era, there are really three sounds. Christine McVie's sound during this time is more straight ahead pop, with a slight touch of blues. Buckingham's sound is more rock and roll with a touch of folk. And Nicks? Is sort of a hodgepodge of all of the above.

I was a bit surprised with the choice of "Rhiannon" in the poll though. I thought for sure it'd be "Dreams," "Go Your Own Way," or "Don't Stop."

Rhiannon their most beautiful? That's debatable. Actually, as much as I am not a Stevie Nicks fan, I'd say that the band's (that era anyway) most beautiful song is a Nicks penned tune aptly titled "Beautiful Child" from Tusk.

I figured "Dreams" would probably be on the list because it was the band's only #1 hit and came from the album Rumours - which of course is touted by many as one of the greatest albums ever made. Personally, I find its follow up, Tusk, to be far more enjoyable. But that's just me.

I am not a Fleetwood Mac fan, I just like some of their songs. So you´re surelly right and "Rhiannon" is just one of my favorite songs (I would list it among my Top 100, no doubt). But "Beautifull Child" is somehow... boring for me... I would choose "Sara" on that album... see, I´m rather popish, Vicky... :D :D

Wow, this could turn into a Fleetwood thread!

I used to listen to their Greatest Hits album on the way to work on an hour long bus journey, and Seven Wonders and Hold Me became my favourites, on repeat constantly about 4 years ago...

Little Lies has fond memories for me as well...and also comes straight to mind when someone mentions the band.
