i couldn't define the music for you i'm afraid and i don't know much about the mods except to the say that they were the more straightlaced rock fans of the sixties and seventies who were posher and well dressed. the punks hated them and the feeling was mutual! i may be completely wrong but that's my idea of mods!

Mods liked bands such as Secret Affair, the Faces and The Who. They rode scooters, dressed expensively and took lots of pills if I recall. There was a big Mod revival at the end of the 70s, and I remember this well. Mods kind of 'fused' with groups like 'rude-boys' and skinhead factions, to create the classic 'Brit in a Fred Perry' look, which itself matured into the 'catalogue boy', Pods and burgundy tank tops......

Whenever I think of 'Mod', I remember sad looking groups of pimply youths broken down on motorway hard-shoulders each bank holiday weekend. I never did get the whole 'scooter' thing - horrible slow tart's handbags covered with chrome and mirrors (and thats just the women!). I do remember fights between Mods and just about everybody else during the late 70s. For some inexplicable reason Mods thought the world was against them, so they sought acceptance by hitting others first. You can see the skinhead link here..

Eeeh, those were the days - overtaking scooters on my 125, giving them the 'V' then hoping I didn't have to stop at lights for a beating! Funny folk.

In those days (at the age of 17) I did wear a black leather jacket, unfeasably tight jeans and Doctor Martin boots, so I suppose I was. Mind you, the bands I listened to ranged from Rush, Motorhead etc to The Damned, Buzzcocks and oddities like Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan and anything from 2-Tone. The Mod v Rocker thing was a throwback from the 60s that just seemed to continue for no understandable reason. The real enemy were the skins and the new romantics, one bunch a group of right-wing idiots and the other aliens from another planet. Growing up 8 miles from the nearest town did provide an unhealthily insular view of the world that only began to change when I discovered The Smiths and the Cocteau Twins. The alternative to all of this was to become a 'good ol' boy' with a Ford Escort and a Massey Ferguson, but I moved up north before I learned to chase my sisters, thankfully.

Oh Marc, any sign of the food parcel yet?

NR musical interlude :

"All of My Heart " -- ABC

Once upon a time when we were friends

I gave you my heart. the story ends

No happy ever after, now were friends

Wish upon a star if that might help

The stars collide if you decide

Wish upon a star if that might help

What?s it like to have loved and to lose her touch?

What?s it like to have loved and to lose that much?

Well I hope and I pray

That maybe someday

You?ll walk in the room with my heart

Add and subtract

But as a matter of fact

Now that you?re gone I still want you back

Remembering

Surrendering

Remembering that part

All of my heart

Spilling up pink silk and coffee lace

You hook me up, I rendevouz at your place

Your lipstick and your lip gloss seals my fate

Sentimental powers might help you now

But skip the hearts and flowers, skip the ivory towers

You?ll be disappointed and I?ll lose a friend

No I won?t be told there?s a crock of gold

At the end of the rainbow

Or that pleasure and pain, sunshine and rain

Might make this love grow

But I hope and I pray

That maybe someday

You?ll walk in the room with my heart

Add and subtract

But as a matter of fact

Now that you?re gone I still want you back

Remembering

Surrendering

The kindest cut?s the cruellest part

All of my heart

Yes I hope and I pray

That maybe someday

You?ll walk in the room with my heart

And I shrug and I say

That maybe today

You?ll come home soon

Surrendering

Remembering

Surrendering that part-all of my heart
