Outside of LOL I have a problem with internet abbreviations and even more so the shortened spelling of words such as "neway" which was used by a previous poster in this thread. The problem I have with all of this is the younger generation who we usually see using most of this (I don't chat so I am not sure what is used anymore) is getting caught up in between proper grammar and chat grammar.

I would consider this chat grammar the equivalent of ebonics which was a volatile issue a few years ago. And we all wonder "Why Johnny Can't Read"!

I have told my own sons not to get caught up in it but do they listen to dear old dad?.....of course not! At the beginning of this post I said besides LOL and though I may sound contradictory I have always thought that was a neat way to tell someone on the other side that you found their statement to be funny since verbal sounds and physical contact is not happening on a computer.

Talking of younger people and their abbrievations, I read a job application recently in which the covering letter was full of shortened words. The person wrote the letter as if they were writing a text message on a mobile phone.

You was shortened to "U" and so on.....very annoying and very unprofessional!

That's ridiculous! I've never seen that before! I think shortened words are great for text messages as you get your message through and you don't need to waste money (we all know what it's like to be a student!) I have no problem with a LOL or a WTF thrown in here and there, but I prefer to use and read proper grammar in emails and such. MSN I see and use all sorts of abbreviations as it keeps the conversation flowing faster and if the other person knows what it means, then there is no chance for mis-communication

yeah, i really don't like abbreviations. i don't really use any on the boards, except for LOL now and then. and when i'm writing a text i'll write it in proper english first and then reduce words if i don't have enough space. as sue said, us students need to save money where we can!!
