songs about prejudice

"Witch Hunt"

The night is black

Without a moon

The air is thick and still

The vigilantes gather on

The lonely torch lit hill

Features distorted in the flickering light

The faces are twisted and grotesque

Silent and stern in the sweltering night

The mob moves like demons possessed

Quiet in conscience, calm in their right

Confident their ways are best

The righteous rise

With burning eyes

Of hatred and ill-will

Madmen fed on fear and lies

To beat and burn and kill

They say there are strangers who threaten us

In our immigrants and infidels

They say there is strangeness too dangerous

In our theaters and bookstore shelves

That those who know what's best for us

Must rise and save us from ourselves

Quick to judge

Quick to anger

Slow to understand

Ignorance and prejudice

And fear walk hand in hand...

I've lifted a couple of my posts to the "controversial songs" thread a few months back.

--------------------------------

[*] from cduniverse.com

"STAND!" was Sly & The Family Stone's fourth album, and contained the hits Everyday People and the title track. It also contained Sly's first foray into social/political songwriting with Don't Call Me *******, Whitey, which touches on black and white racism. Sly Stone was too busy having a good time and living life to the excess to begin to realize how influential his brand of funky soul would become. Early signs of rap also surfaced on this album.

--------------------------------

[*]Short People got no reason

Short People got no reason

Short People got no reason

To live

Ah, yes, that deep song that ponders the question: If inanimate keys of different colors can co-exist on a piano, why can't we as complex humans of different colors do the same? ahhhh.....

No one has ever accused Paul Mc Cartney of being deep.....

Can it be about Mexican Racsim? How about half in Spanish?

Frijolero

Molotov

Yo ya estoy hasta la madre

de que me pongan sombrero

escucha entonces cuando digo

no me llames frijolero.

Y aunque exista algún respeto

y no metamos las narices

nunca inflamos la moneda

haciendo guerra a otros países.

Te pagamos con petróleo

e intereses nuestra deuda

mientras tanto no sabemos

quien se queda con la feria.

Aunque nos hagan la fama

de que somos vendedores

de la droga que sembramos

ustedes son consumidores.

Don't call me gringo,

You f*ckin beaner

stay on your side

of that goddamn river

don't call me gringo,

You beaner.

No me digas beaner,

Mr. Puñetero

Te sacaré un susto

por racista y culero.

No me llames frijolero,

Pinche gringo puñetero.

Now I wish I had a dime

for every single time

I've gotten stared down

For being in the wrong side of town.

And a rich man I'd be

if I had that kind of chips

lately I wanna smack the mouths

of these racists.

Podrás imaginarte desde afuera,

ser un Mexicano cruzando la frontera,

pensando en tu familia mientras que pasas,

dejando todo lo que conoces atrás.

Si tuvieras tú que esquivar las balas

de unos cuantos gringos rancheros

Las seguirás diciendo good for nothing wetback?

si tuvieras tú que empezar de cero.

Now why don't you look down

to where your feet is planted

That U.S. soil that makes you take [bleep] for granted

If not for Santa Ana, just to let you know

That where your feet are planted would be Mexico

Correcto!

And , on a slightly facetious note, though the song does fit the "question"...

on colour prejudice...

Black or White - Michael Jackson (Who better to comment, since he's tried both?)

(returns to serious mode)On a different note, any body have any on the less obvious prejudices, eg towards people with mental illness, learning disabilities?

One by the mighty Ian Dury:

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I wibble when I piddle

Cos my middle is a riddle

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I dribble when I nibble

And I quibble when I scribble

Hello to you out there in Normal Land

You may not comprehend my tale or understand

As I crawl past your window give me lucky looks

You can be my body but you'll never read my books

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm knobbled on the cobbles

Cos I hobble when I wobble

Swim!

So place your hard-earned peanuts in my tin

And thank the Creator you're not in the state I'm in

So long have I been languished on the shelf

I must give all proceedings to myself

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus, I'm spasticus

I'm spasticus autisticus

54 appliances in leather and elastic

100 000 thank yous from 27 spastics

Spasticus, spasticus

Spasticus autisticus

Spasticus, spasticus

Spasticus autisticus

Spasticus, spasticus

Spasticus autisticus

Widdling, griddling, skittling, diddling,

fiddling, diddling, widdling, diddling spasticus

I'm spasticus, spasticus

Spasticus autisticus

Spasticus, spasticus

Spasticus autisticus

Spasticus, spasticus

Spasticus autisticus

Spasticus, spasticus

Spasticus autisticus

I'm spasticus!

I'm spasticus!

I'm spasticus!

I'm spasticus!

I'm spasticus!

I'm spasticus!

I'm spasticus!

Spasticus!

Regards

No one has ever accused Paul Mc Cartney of being deep.....

"Eleanor Rigby," "Fool On The Hill," "Blackbird," "Yesterday," "Lady Madonna" could all begin the list to belie that statement, Marc. With a few hundred hits, there are bound to be some clunkers such as "Ebony and Ivory," but to suggest McCartney lacks depth is erroneous.

As for a suggested song for this thread topic, "Everything Is Beautiful" by Ray Stevens.

how about from Tommy...

Pinball Wizard

Ever since I was a young boy,

I've played the silver ball.

From Soho down to Brighton

I must have played them all.

But I ain't seen nothing like him

In any amusement hall...

That deaf dumb and blind kid

Sure plays a mean pin ball !

He stands like a statue,

Becomes part of the machine.

Feeling all the bumpers

Always playing clean.

He plays by intuition,

The digit counters fall.

That deaf dumb and blind kid

Sure plays a mean pin ball !

He's a pinball wizard

There has to be a twist.

A pinball wizard's

Got such a supple wrist.

'How do you think he does it? I don't know!

What makes him so good?'

Ain't got no distractions

Can't hear no buzzers and bells

Don't see no lights a-flashin'

Plays by sense of smell

Always gets a replay

Never seen him fall

That deaf dumb and blind kid

Sure plays a mean pin ball.

I thought I was

The Bally table king.

But I just handed

My pin ball crown to him.

Even on my favorite table

He can beat my best.

His disciples lead him in

And he just does the rest.

He's got crazy flipper fingers

Never seen him fall...

That deaf dumb and blind kind

Sure plays a mean pin ball.

lol, whoa I didn't realise this was my question at first, coz i did it ages ago, i just thought someone randomly wanted to know the exact same thing as i did.

This was originally for an english class assessment and I wrote part of a 2000 word essay on the prejudice shown in Neil Young's Southern Man
