Thanks for the thorough lists. I did a little research on my own and was pleased to find some songs I already have on CDs and some I planned to download. Most of the songs from 1975 were songs I love, but some were songs that make me violently ill, like "Bertha Butt Boogie." My list so far is

When Will I be Loved-Linda Rondstadt

Fox on the Run-Sweet

Born To Run-Bruce Springsteen

At Seventeen-Janis Ian

Lady Marmalade-LaBelle

Shining Star-Earth, Wind, and Fire

Rhinestone Cowboy-Glen Campbell

Sister Golden Hair-America

Black Water-The Doobie Brothers

Love Will Keep Us Together-The Captain and Tenille

Bloody Well Right-Supertramp

Miracles-Jefferson Starship

You Are So Beautiful-Joe Cocker

if any of these are inaccurate, please let me know. I think I'll pick more from your lists, as that should give me enough (with what I already picked) for two CDs. Again, thanks much!

I was going by the dates on the records for my analysis, not when they were hits. Whether they were or were not hits I think is irrelevant, as great stuff like "Stairway To Heaven" was never a single by Led Zeppelin, but it is still great. I always go by the copyright date on the record sleeve/label. The release date I think is more important.

Sorry for any confusion.

I'd like to initiate debate over "Freebird" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. That was released on their first LP in 1973, yet someone listed it as a song of 1975. How does that work? I mean, Aerosmith's "Dream On" was a hit on re-release in 1976, but it was released on an LP (and a single) in 1973. Does that make it a "song" (as was stated in the original question by CostelloGirl75) of 1976 or 1973? I'd say 1973, because that was the original release date.

Your thoughts?

You're gonna need some of these for the 186 songs here (divided by 18-20 per disc) 12 disc? maybe?

Funny stuff Floyd, but I think it would be money well spent, don't you? Even if the release dates are'nt accurate, I think they are all memorible, and worth the recording prospect for posterity!

Well to be honest jippers, you are correct so far as the dates of the songs. But I guess what counts is when the songs first got airplay and people heard them.

I can imagine that sometimes even the best song takes time to catch on.

I feel that even though a song like Average White Band's Pick up the Pieces was made in '74 it wasn't considered a hit until '75.

Kinda like movies, even though one might see the opening of a new movie in a theater, rarely will they see the same year copyright that they are currently in. Further, by the time that the Oscars are awarded it may be as much as two years difference, even more.

I guess it all boils down to when the majority heard it and accepted it, not when it was released.

My point is if the majority of people haven't heard the song does the song play? Does the song count if no one's heard it? I like to think of the actual time that I heard a song for the first time and where I was and what I was doing. I remember hearing Free Bird for the first time on the radio when it first came out and rushing to the music store to buy the album. I got home, put it on the turntable, looked at the date and went, "Huh?"

But, this is only my opinion and you are right about the original dates.

  • 2 months later...

I can only think of two albums off the top of my head that were released in '75, WWYWH-Pink Floyd, A New World Record-ELO. But if you only want some of the good stuff from the albums, here it is:

Shine On You Crazy Diamond- Pink Floyd

Have A Cigar- Pink Floyd

Livin Thing- ELO

Do Ya-ELO

Rockaria-ELO

That's about it. Wasn't there a Zeppelin album released in '75?

jippers mentioned

Tangled Up in Blue

by Bob Dylan. Well the whole 'Blood on the Tracks' album ('75 release) was his Best album of the '70's.

The rest of the songs -

off that album are:

Simple Twist of Fate

You're a Big Girl Now

Idiot Wind

You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go

Meet Me in the Morning

Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts

If You See Her, Say Hello

Shelter from the Storm

Buckets of Rain

You should have some Zappa also :)
