I am making a CD of various Rock songs from the 70s, and I need one song from 1972 and one song from 1979 to complete my list. The CD has no particular theme, other than I like these songs. Here is what I have so far:

Bang A Gong (Get It On)-T Rex

Walk on the Wild Side-Lou Reed

Cover of the Rolling Stone-Dr Hook

Black Water-The Doobie Brothers

Jackie Blue-Ozark Mountain Daredevils

Don?t Fear the Reaper-BOC

Dust in the Wind-Kansas

I Want You to Want Me-Cheap Trick

Beast of Burden-Stones

Hot Child in the City-Nick Gilder

Cruel to Be Kind-Nick Lowe

If any one can suggest songs similar to these from 1972 and 1979 I would appreciate it . Thanks!

When you talk about great music from the 70's/80'S, you can't forget the best "melodic" bands with the most powerful voices and musicianship.

FOREIGNER(LOU GRAMM), STYX(DENNIS DEYOUNG), SURVIVOR(JIMI JAMESON), JOURNEY(STEVE PERRY), LITTLE RIVER BAND(GLENN SHRROCK), AND PLAYER(PETER BECKETT ). God bless these bands that make you remember there was a time when words had meaning and you could understand them, there was such a thing as "melody" and they actually played their own instruments and wrote their own songs. That was talent!! That was when they didn't record "junk" just to make a buck. The 70's were very much alive and remain "CLASSICS" today.

You picked the wrong place at the wrong time for music. The vacuous years of the 70's remain the dead years for rock and roll. Good luck, and remember that any suggestions have caveats....

I kind of half agree with you, as I think rock's best years were 67-77. So I agree with you on the 77-79 part, that's when things started looking bad for rock, in my opinion. But I think that 72-77 were really good years for rock.

For 79, some suggestions are:

Pink Floyd - another brick in the wall part 2

Pink Floyd - comfortably numb

AC/DC - Highway to Hell

The Clash - London Calling

For 1972:

Elton John - Crocodile Rock

Yes - Roundabout

Yes - And You And I

Yes - Close to the Edge

Black Sabbath - Iron Man

Elton John - Rocket Man

Alice Cooper - School's Out

Alice Cooper - Public Animal #9

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water

David Bowie - Suffragette City

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick

T Rex - Metal Guru

Blue Oyster Cult - Cities on flame with rock and roll

Edgar Winter Group - Frankenstein

Maybe 1979, but 1972 was was a great year for rock. Other posters have named songs and provided lists. I think it was the end of the greatest period of rock, but no less substantial.
