John Lennon's world . . .

My question would it work? John lennon's world that is. As the world he described in imagine. I'll post the lyrics . . .

Imagine there's no heaven,

It's easy if you try,

No hell below us,

Above us only sky,

Imagine all the people

living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,

It isnt hard to do,

Nothing to kill or die for,

No religion too,

Imagine all the people

living life in peace...

Imagine no possesions,

I wonder if you can,

No need for greed or hunger,

A brotherhood of man,

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world...

You may say Im a dreamer,

but Im not the only one,

I hope some day you'll join us,

And the world will live as one.

Okay, what he describes is definetly communist. Would it work w/ America?

Of course it wouldn't work. Too many long to be better than others. But communist? Really? OK, perhaps a touch of socialism. Mostly though it's pure Christianity as proposed by Jesus in his Sermon On The Mount. I'm an atheist but I see that clearly.

While it's not my favorite Lennon song either keep in mind that Lennon didn't believe it was possible either. It was a sad paean to what should but could not be. That's why "Imagine"...because you'll never see it.

You can't argue the pure beauty of the sentiment though.

Lennon was an idiot. If any of you ever read 1984, We, Brave New World, or fahrenheit 451 know that the only way to have an actual utopian society is to give of freedoms. So may like it, but then again some may like the destruction of the human being.

I think you can call Lennon many things but I don´t think "idiot" would be one of them... I wish I was 1% as idiot as he was... :P

"Image" is fiction. I read all the books that you mention, "1984" is one of my all time fave... and they are fiction too.

I take the song 'Imagine' to be a statement about peace, not communist society. John Lennon wasn't a communist or an idiot. He was a bagist!!

The more I read about him, the more I admire him. At least he was using his power and influence as a former Beatle for good and not evil!

I don't think John actually intended to prescribe this as a lifestyle per se, but rather a "stop and think for a minute" phrase. we've all seen the bumper sticker "Visualize World Peace" (or whirled peas), it's the same statement. "Even a fool knows you can't reach up and touch the stars, but that doesn't stop a wise man from trying"

Don't give up on the status quo. Get out and make a difference.

For an interesting comparison, take a look at what Paul wrote about the same time ...

Too many people going underground,

Too many reaching for a piece of cake.

Too many people pulled and pushed around,

Too many waiting for that lucky break.

That was your first mistake,

You took your lucky break and broke it in two.

Now what can be done for you?

You broke it in two.

Too many people sharing party lines,

Too many people never sleep in late.

Too many people paying parking fines,

Too many hungry people losing weight.

That was your first mistake,

You took your lucky break and broke it in two.

Now what can be done for you?

You broke it in two.

Too many people preaching practices,

Don't let 'em tell you what you wanna be.

Too many people holding back,

This is crazy, and baby, it's not like me.

That was your last mistake,

I find my love awake and waiting to be.

Now what can be done for you?

She's waiting for me

Mike

Dude, you obviously haven't read enough into 1984 to truly wrap your head around it, don't forget that Orwell was a strong socialist.

Alright teacher, teach me then. If you seem to know so much on this book. Dont even dare say I havent read into the book enough to "wrap [my] head around it" I was being a bit rash when I called him an idiot. I think however that he truly did feel that this was the world he wanted and dreamt of having someday. Perhapes to say if he had one wish this may be it.

I happen to think Too many People is Paul's best solo song.

Beyond the meaning...it's a good rock song.

Paul´s first album was very good. Even "Ram" had some good songs too. Seems the Beatle´s flame was still alive... :headphones:

About a day after after i created this little thing here, i was talking with some of my smarter friends about life and time travel in general. One of them introduced the idea (theroy) that humans have broken away for the ecosystem (or whatever you like to call it). I've thought about it awhile after and it makes sense. I know it has nothing to do with anything in the posts, but it bogged my mind. I can't stop thinking about it. We constantly think of our selves as a separte thing from animals, and we truly aren't.

All i wanted to know when i first posted was if communism would work; anywhere. it had a little to do with lennon, but not much. To me, the whole "no posessions" thing means communism. Communism in theroy is a great thing. But in reality it isn't that great.
