I suppose it comes down to how you catalog/categorize music.

Here's the way I'd conjugate (j/k) the word soul:

Soul begets R&B which begets Motown which begets Funk and so on and so forth. No, sorry. No room here for Rap.

I am listening to my launchcast and it is a soul mood today, which is cool with me. I just heard a song from O. V. Wright. Wow!! The song was "That's The Way I Feel About Cha'" and I was turning it up and loving it. I had never heard of him before today so I looked up his bio and he was huge in the 70's with Memphis soul. I am going to have to hear more of this soul singer. Tragically he died in 1980 at the young age of 41. He had a hit with "I'd Rather Be (Blind, Crippled & Crazy)", which can be found on the new Derek Trucks album.

The 70's had some good "Blue Eyed" soul led by Hall and Oates.
