Steel2Velvet
Actually "Soul" music metamorphised toward R&B then disco starting in the early 70's. I feel the best pure soul peaked in the late 60's. Wilson Pickett - Land of a Thousand Dances Rascals - People Got To Be Free OJs - Love Train Aretha Franklin - Respect Three Dog Night - Shambala Sonny Charles - Black Pearl Marvin Gaye - Too Busy Thinking 'Bout My Baby James Brown - I Feel Good Mitch Ryder - Devil With the Blue Dress On About the best pure soul act to survive from the 70's until now is Hall and Oats

bluesboy
Rhino Records puts out a good series (Soul Hits of the '70s: Didn't It Blow Your Mind!) that you can probably get the individual volumes or the box set. ::
katie_sane
I think Wilson Pickett has some of the funkiest songs ever, especially 'In The Midnight Hour'. Marvin Gaye's version of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' is great too. Another song that me and my friends like grooving to is 'Saturday Night At The Movies' by The Drifters. You just can't not like that song.

Uncle Joe
Stevie Wonder is certainly well represented in this thread, as he should be. Here are some other 70's Soul artists worth mentioning: Eddie Floyd-(Knock On Wood) Sam and Dave Johnny Taylor-Who's Makin' Love (To Your Old Lady While You've Been Out Makin' Love) The Staple Singers The Delfonics The Intruders The Stylistics The Ojays The Spinners Lou Rawls Al Green Jerry Butler Blue Magic Carla Thomas Little Milton Jeannie Knight (Mr. Big Stuff) The Dramatics The Emotions Frederick Knight Isaac Hayes The Temprees Teddy Pendergrast Brenton Wood The Capitols (Cool Jerk) Clarence Carter Donnie Elbert The Embers The Flaming Embers The Poets The Ribbons The Versatones Taj Mahal I know i've omitted many, but I may return to list them as well. Trying to stay with 70's artists. Not all funky but all very soulful. I leave you with this salutation a la my good friend, Don Corneliussssssssssss..."Peace, love and soooooooooulllll"!" Tybalt
From just past the 70s. Jack Mack & the Heart Attack's Cardiac Party is arguably the best original Soul music ever created by white folks. This album from 1982 is on CD, but hard to find -- it's not currently available from Amazon but read the rave reviews.
Jimmy1104
Hey Uncle Joe....throw the Chi-Lites and Manhattans on your list.
Uncle Joe
Gladly Jimmy. Great choices. Ironically the lead singer of the Chi-Lites was the late Eugene Record. Apt name, wouldn't you say? "Tell me, have you seen her?"

Batman
If that comment had anything at all to do with my Funkadelic suggestion, just listen to the song, it sounds pretty soul-ish I'd say.
