PSYCHOcatholic
Whats your favorite Gangster/Mobster/Hitman movies? I LOVE those kinds of movie, but they got to have a lot of blood to make it real. Maybe a couple of old Steven Seagal movies, always Mr. Bobby Deniro. My FAVORITE has got to be GoodFellas. I just saw it not long ago, and it went to the top of my list. Ray Liotta is a very good actor, and i have to say Ive never seen Joe Pesci play a part like that... Whats your thoughts on your favorite? or GoodFellas?
invisible_r
Goodfellas is a great movie. but the greatest has to be "the godfather" , my fave being the first one.
RonJonSurfer
I think both of the movies mentioned (Goodfellas and The Godfather) are tough to beat. I happen to like The Untouchables with Sean Connery and Kevin Costner and for a parody of old mob movies see Michael Keaton's "Johnny Dangerously". If you want to see Pesci again see Casino. Others are Scarface, A Bronx Tale and Donnie Brasco. Worth a mention is TV's The Soprano's. I live right in the heart of Soprano's territory and it seems an accurate depiction of the people and places I know where organized crime is a daily event. Funny note on Ray Liotta. He showed up at my daughters CYO basketball game right around Christmas 2003. He is from the area and was visiting family and went to see the game. Anyway, some kids saw him and were trying to name all of his best movies....not one said Goodfellas..maybe they weren't allowed to see it yet, but I added it to the list for them. I also just missed Paul Castellano getting gunned down in New York City. I got to the scene as he was still laid out on the sidewalk after getting out of his limo. miamisammy29
"GoodFellas" is the greatest movie ever made. "Johnny Dangerously" is the best gangster spoof ever made. But you gotta love "The Godfather" when Santino buys it at the toolbooth. One of the greatest scenes in cinema history.

Tenacious_Peaches
I love all the above mentioned movies, especially GoodFellas. I am obsessed with The Sopranos (why does it take so long between seasons? Why, Lord, why?). When I think of gangster movies, I always think of "White Heat" with James Cagney. "I made it, Ma. Top of the world!"
Tenacious_Peaches
Waiting for The Sopranos kills me too. Every week I happen to travel the same path that Tony takes during the shows opening credits. All I can think of as I see those sites is when is the next season starting. BTW James Gandolfini and Mario of Molta Mario Cooking fame both were at Rutgers during the same years I was there. I graduated in 80, they followed a couple of years later. But do you sing Got Yourself a Gun every time you travel the route, RonJon? I know I would. :: And I love Molto Mario! He's so great...I drool when I watch him cook those wonderful Italian meals. Yum.
Tenacious_Peaches
...this gigantic conglomeration of cheese, meat, sauce and dough called a Stromboli. I am wise to the ways of the stromboli, my good man. Every time I go home to Connecticut, I devour all the good food (like strombolis) that I can't seem to find here in Georgia. Damn, I'm hungry. ::
Uncle Joe
Here are three "mob" flicks you should add to your "must-see" list. The first is early Scorcese with DeNiro and Keitel. Great mob drama. This young DeNiro looks like Rick Danko of The Band. The next two are mob comedies that feature good stories and wonderful acting. 1-Mean Streets1973.. In director Martin Scorsese's look at New York City's Little Italy, Charlie (Harvey Keitel) deals with the pressures of working his way up the ranks of a local mob, while coping with his family's disapproval of his epileptic girlfriend (Amy Robinson). Meanwhile, his small-time gambler friend, Johnny Boy (Robert De Niro), threatens to ruin Charlie's reputation with debts to a loan shark. The film marks Scorsese's first teaming with De Niro. (synopsis courtesy of Netflix) 2-Wise Guys1987..Brian De Palma, one of our most stylish and subversive directors of suspense and horror, tries his hand at comedy here. Danny De Vito and Joe Piscopo play lifelong friends and low men on the mafia totem pole. When they foul up, their boss (Dan Hedaya) offers each his life in exchange for a favor: He must kill his best friend. The idea of two friends not knowing that they each have a contract on the other's life should be good for a few laughs and De Vito works hard at it (Piscopo though devoid of acting chops is great for DeVito to play off of). There are lots of good laughs here...and some insight into NY/NJ wannabes and their families. (synopsis mostly from Amazon.com) 3-Things Change1985..In David Mamet's acclaimed comedy, Jerry (Joe Mantegna), a misfit Mafia henchman, is assigned the low-level job of keeping an eye on Gino (Don Ameche), a shoe repairman fingered by the Mob to confess to a murder he didn't commit. But Gino's mistaken for a Mafia boss, and the two are suddenly catapulted to the highest levels of mobster status. Only friendship will see them through this dangerous adventure alive! (synopsis courtesy of Netflix) Check them out.
RonJonSurfer
"The Deli" is one of my favorite off-beat mob related movies. Note the cast of actors here. Mike Starr is the lead guy and if you can't picture whohe is...you've seen him. For instance, he is the hitman following the boys in Dumb and Dumber...they accidently kill him by giving him rat poison meant for them. He also has a two minute part in Uncle Buck dressed as a clown, that arrives drunk for a kids party, because he just came from a bachelor party the night before. Anyway, the characters are great including a strung out David Johannson as one of his regular customers at the Deli. A must watch for a mindless hour and a half. DJ Kat WQAQ98.1
Mario worked at a student hangout called "Stuff Yer Face" as a chef during my Rutgers years. They were famous for this gigantic conglomeration of cheese, meat, sauce and dough called a Stromboli. Very good and certainly why I'll need a heart bypass before I'm 60. Jigga what?! I must have been too young to be there when he was working. I still have a Stuff Yer Face staff shirt (one of the old maroon polos with the gold lettering from back in the like 80's) from when my uncle used to fill in bar there. Although I did have Calista Flockhart as an afterschool teacher when I was in kindgergarten after she graduated Rutgers before she decided she was too good for us New Brunswick-ites The one movie I haven't seen on this list, and I'm quite disappointed by this is... UNTOUCHABLES! How can you not like that movie?!
DJ Kat WQAQ98.1
We did mention The Untouchables somewhere up the list. I had Calista Flockhart as an afterschool teacher too...unfortunately I woke up and the dream ended...mario was Class of 1982 I believe. Your post reminded me of a friend in town that babysat for an actress. I can't remember her name, but she is famous for being the baseball player that cries, causing Tom Hanks to say, There's No Crying In Baseball. '82 was kjust a little before my time. But I only had for one year I had her though, she graduated in 88 and stayed around for a couple years before heading elsewhere. I must have missed the Untouchables. But I still think it's a great f-ing movie.
PSYCHOcatholic
I saw Suicide Kings today...its a pretty good movie. Casting coulda been a little better. Christopher Walken was pretty good though, i have to admit. My next question to you guys! Who do you think is the best mobster actor? I gotta go with Robert DeNiro. Top Bill for the Ultimate Mobster List.
invisible_r
i loved al pacino in the godfather, plus he was dead-sexy! i quite like ray liota too, and joe pesci is the the typical mobster movie actor

He had a small part in Goodfellas too ya know? He played Frenchy, he was the mastermind for the first airport heist that they pull. He makes a couple more appearances here and there. But they really need to give him a chance at a lead.

pete38890
This one needs to be seen at least once. It's disturbing, loosely accurate, and puts Hollywood's glamorization of gangsters in Disneyland: Martin Scorcese's "Gangs of New York."
