I guess he´s free coz he broke the mirror, right? I don´t remember "Tommy" by heart now but if you search on google you´ll find the whole lyrics...

I recall something abouth the Messiah and the Temple... I´ll leave it here till some expert has more info...

I always took it that Tommy was trying to convince potential followers that they should follow him to be happy. All they had to do was leave the church and all would be good, but you had to be brave to make the step.

I'M FREE-I'm free,

And freedom tastes of reality,

I'm free-I'm free,

AN' I'm waiting for you to follow me.

If I told you what it takes

to reach the highest high,

You'd laugh and say 'nothing's that simple'

But you've been told many times before

Messiahs pointed to the door

And no one had the guts to leave the temple!

I'm free-I'm free

And freedom tastes of reality

I'm free-I'm free

And I'm waiting for you to follow me.

Chorus:

How can we follow?

How can we follow?

I watched an interview with Pete Townshend on TV where he talked about Tommy, and he said that Tommy's disciples want a shortcut away from their problems, but that's not something he provides, and that's also the reason why they turn against him. He wants to show them what he went through and wants them to reach a higher level of spirituality by playing pinball deaf, dumb and blind.

Such a weird story, I could never make that up...
