Foxy
The song is talking about world history since the year of Billy Joel's birth. I've read that the song is summing up and providing tons of references to the cold war. His generation didn't start it ("We Didn't Start The Fire"), it had been going for a while before it was 'handed' to them.
Addictedtoclassic
I always thought the chorus summarized the basic fact that the problems of the US were handed to the "Baby Boomers" and they will end up handing it to "Generation X". Just as we will pass on our problems to our children's generation.
Fife
I always thought the chorus summarized the basic fact that the problems of the US were handed to the "Baby Boomers" and they will end up handing it to "Generation X". Just as we will pass on our problems to our children's generation. Thats the conclusion my college humanities class came too.

InsaneTim
He's not going to do a part 2, he hates this song and has been asked numerous times to do a "sequel".
