there's a gorgeous song by christy moore, an irish singer, called 'the voyage'. it uses the metaphor of a voyage on a ship to symbolise a marriage. we sang it at my gran and grandad's 45th wedding anniversary. the words are very appropriate:

I am a sailor, you're my first mate

We signed on together, we coupled our fate

Hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail

For the hearts treasure, together we set sail

With no maps to guide us we steered our own course

Rode out the storms when the winds were gale force

Sat out the doldrums in patience and hope

Working together we learned how to cope

Chorus:

Life is an ocean and love is a boat

In troubled water it keeps us afloat

When we started the voyage, there was just me and you

Now gathered round us, we have a whole crew

Together we're in this relationship

We built it with care to last the whole trip

Our true destination's not marked on any charts

We're navigating to the shores of the heart

Chorus:

Life is an ocean and love is a boat

In troubled water it keeps us afloat

When we started the voyage, there was just me and you

Now gathered round us, we have a whole crew

Not so much about anniversary, but "You Could Be Mine" by GnR is about being with somebody for so long.

While you're breakin' down my back n'

I been rackin' out my brain

It don't matter how we make it

'Cause it always ends the same

You can push it for more mileage

But your flaps r' wearin' thin

And I could sleep on it 'til mornin'

But this nightmare never ends

Don't forget to call my lawyers

With ridiculous demands

An you can take the pity so far

But it's more than I can stand

'Cause this couchtrip's gettin' older

Tell me how long has it been

'Cause 5 years is forever

An you haven't grown up yet

Well, one approach would be to use some songs from 50 years ago, that a couple might remember that bring back special memories...

like

Unforgettable - Nat King Cole

Playing for Keeps - Elvis

or even some '60s...

You Are the Sunshine of My Life - Stevie Wonder

Cherish - The Association

Everything That Touches You - The Association

(kudos to Easy Rider for remembering this song

a few months ago.)

There is a great song by The Samples called "Did You Ever Look So Nice?" Sean Kelly (the singer) wrote it after he met an old couple in a nursing home.

We were children in our places

with the world beneath our feet

Growing up was on our faces

I remember yours so sweet

Did you ever look so nice?

Did you ever look so nice?

Every turn became our future

There for us to make our bet

That the longer I remeber

You're still the hardest to forget

Did You eve rlook so nice

(Repeated)

And if we make it through these changes

To find that nothing was in stone

But the glance of our exchanges

Did they ever look so nice

Did you ever look so nice?

Too bad I didn't find this post sooner. I wrote a song for my in-laws golden wedding anniversary 20 years ago, had it professionally recorded, and recently transferred it to CD. I have been selling on eBay and my own site, http://goldenwedding.net

In the past year I have sold over 80 copies to 33 states and three foreign countries.

Lyrics:

Golden Love

Silk and satin will decay, iron and steel will rust away,

And the dawn will even fade the stars above

But gold's a substance that endures and keeps its luster through the years

And that is why I treasure so your Golden Love.

Yes, gold's a substance that endures and keeps its luster through the years

And that is why I tresure so your Golden Love

It was 50 years go I heard you say "I love you so",

We took our vows and we prayed to God above

Wealth and treasure had we none, no gilded mansion was our home,

But we were rich beyond compare with Golden Love

Yes, gold's a substance that endures and keeps its luster through the years

And we were rich beyond compare with Golden Love

Troubles came down through the years but love would wipe away the tears

And lift us up like the wings of a dove

When we felt life's storm winds blow, you'd whisper soft, "I love you so"

And we knew we'd see it through with Golden Love

Yes gold's a substance that endures and keeps its luster through the years

And we knew we'd see it through with Golden Love

As we traveled this life through our Golden Love forever grew

And filled our lives like a hand fills a glove

Now that we are growing gray, on our golden wedding day,

I love you still and always will with Golden Love

Yes, gold's a substance that endures and keeps its luster through the years,

I love you still and always will with Golden Love.

I love you still and always will with Golden Love.
