Songs about losing a beloved pet

i dont know if it fits your description, but "jed the humanoid " by grandaddy is about losing a friend

Last night something pretty bad happened

we lost a friend,

all shocked and broken

shut down exploded

Jeddy 3 is what we first called him

then it was Jed,

but Jed's system's dead

therefore so's Jed

We assembled him in the kitchen

made out of this and,

made out of that and,

whatever was at hand

When we finished Jed

we were so proud

we celebrated,

we congratulated

at what we'd created

Jed could run or walk sing or talk and

compile thoughts and

solve lots of problems

we learned so much from him

A couple years went by

and something happened

we gave Jed less attention,

we had new inventions

we left for a convention

Jed had found our booze

and drank every drop

he fizzled and popped,

he rattled and knocked,

and finally he just stopped

It´s very sad to lose a pet, we all know it because we´ve been through it... I don´t see any song that will fit now...just the line from Leonard Cohen "everybody has that broken feeling like their father or their dog just died", from "Everybody knows"... maybe you should google? Or wait till I find something... Best yet, our Queen of Google has just came from a long holiday and she´ll be glad to help, as usual... she´s a real angel! ;)

HENRY GROSS lyrics - "Shannon"

Another day's at end

Mama says she's tired again

No one can even begin to tell her

I hardly know what to say

But maybe it's better that way

If Pop-pa were here I'm sure he'd tell her

Shannon, is gone I heard

She's drifting out to sea

She always loved to swim away

Maybe she'll find an island with a shaded tree

Just like the one in our backyard

Mama tries hard to pretend

That things will get better again

Somehow she's keepin' it all inside her

But finally the tears fill our eyes

And I know that somewhere tonight

She knows how much we really miss her

Shannon, is gone I heard

She's drifting out to sea

She always loved to swim away

Maybe she'll find an island

With a shaded tree

Just like the one in our back yard

Ah, just like the one in our back yard

Ah....

Just like the one in our back yard

ok, im sorry if i keep coming things that are not right, but here's another one i thought of, "where the birds always sing" by the cure

the world is neither fair nor unfair

the idea is just a way for us to understand

but the world is neither fair nor unfair

so one survives

the others die

and you always want a reason why

but the world is neither just nor unjust

it's just us trying to feel that there's some sense in it

no, the world is neither just nor unjust

and though going young

so much undone

is a tragedy for everyone

it doesn't speak a plan or any secret thing

no unseen sign or untold truth in anything...

but living on in others, in memories and dreams

is not enough

you want everything

another world where the sun always shines

and the birds always sing

always sing...

the world is neither fair nor unfair

the idea is just a way for us to understand

no the world is neither fair nor unfair

so some survive

and others die

and you always want a reason why

but the world is neither just nor unjust

it's just us trying to feel that there's some sense in it

no, the world is neither just nor unjust

and though going young

so much undone

is a tragedy for everyone

it doesn't mean there has to be a way of things

no special sense that hidden hands are pulling strings

but living on in others, in memories and dreams

is not enough

and it never is

you always want so much more than this...

an endless sense of soul and an eternity of love

a sweet mother down below and a just father above

for living on in others, in memories and dreams

is not enough

you want everything

another world

where the birds always sing

another world

where the sun always shines

another world

where nothing ever dies...

  • 3 weeks later...

He spoke with tears of 15 years

How his dog and him traveled about

His dog up and died, he up and died

After 20 years he still grieves

Whenever I hear those lines in Mr. Bojangles by Nina Simone it always makes me sad and worry about my dog dying cause I think I'll grieve for that long too.

The loss of a pet is terribly sad and no one can say that they were "just an animal" when you have suffered such a loss. Losing a friend or family member, is just that; whether they walked on 2 legs or 4.

Your comment is great, Sue, I told this to my husband when you posted it and now it´s become part of his phillosophy... probably mine too, as I have this kitty since one month and a half and for the first time in my life I love a pet... doesn´t matter if she walks on two or four legs...

Losing a pet is so sad. :( I've lost many in my lifetime.

These songs let me cry an ocean, so that I could continue remembering with a smile.

Here's a link to a nice website for dealing with pet loss. It's called "Gone But Not Forgotten".

Also, here are links to other sites where you can read and share epitaphs, create personal memorials, and leave messages for your loved ones.
