I can state with relative certainty that ATC will not like Radiohead save one or two songs. Most of their early stuff was straight forward mope rock, and they have since moved on to nearly unlistenable background noise for sleeping. I think this band is another example of a marginally talented group capitalizing on the buzz created by the so-called expert music critics. A band that never would've gotten the public's attention without non-stop promotion by the industry rag writers (no offense Edna). (see also The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Darkness). Then again, what do I know?

Im trying to find an appropriate response for this... Radiohead are definitely NOT marginally talented, the lyrics to all of most of their songs are amazing, the music is moving, his voice is haunting. Also, I think you are completely wrong in saying that the only reason they were famous was that they were constantly promoted, and you CANNOT compare radiohead to the darkness and the yeah yeah yeahs!!!

Im sorry but you have insulted one of my favourite bands, the band that help me through a difficult adolesence, me and everyone else i know that it, with their "mope rock" songs, as you call them.

i have nothing against you disliking Radiohead, its just a matter of opinion. i only have a problem with you calling them "marginally talented group capitalizing on the buzz created by the so-called expert music critics." music critics didnt overhype them till OK computer came out, at least here in Europe. Now in America, I dont know, maybe they were overhyped.

ATC, I'd recommend you listen to fake plastic trees, fade out (street spirit), creep, my iron lung, no surprises and just to get a good feel for Radiohead. If you don't like these, you just might not like any of their other stuff either :)

So I was at the store yesterday standing by the fake plastic trees with my ear next to them. But they weren't saying anything. They just sat there with no look or emotion to them whatsoever. When someone finally asked if I needed help, I simply replied...

"Ssssshhhhhhhh, I'm trying to listen to the fake plastic trees."

Needless to say he grabbed my arm and escorted me out of there...

If I get the urge to listen to Radiohead, I'll try to sample them at one of the used music stores. What album should I be looking for?

Personally I think that if ATC is gonna like any RadioHeaD he should probably go for their debut, 'Pablo Honey' in that album it's just real simple cut and dry rock, you know, stuff that anyone can appreciate, 'Creep' and 'Anyone Can Play Guitar' are some of the best from the album (there's this great line in Anyone can play.... "I wanna be wanna be Jim Morrison")

As far as their genre their debut as I stated was a rocker, and then 'The Bends' (which I believe to be a masterpiece) is a real mellow kind of rock album.... and then OK Computer, which gets kind of weird, it's kind of like this

Pink Floyd + Computer Effects= OK Computer, Amnesiac, and Kid A

and then their latest release, Hail To The Thief (which I also really like) is kind of a combination of their early, more normal, stuff and their newer, weirder, stuff.

IMO 'Pablo Honey' is a good introduction to Radiohead, but doesn't come close to 'The Bends' for power and all round....whateveritis....that makes an album great. I think they went a bit off after that and a bit too introspective, or perhaps thats because I don't have much time to just sit and listen anymore.

Anybody wanting to buy an album that will be hailed as one of the all time greats in years to come should buy 'The Bends'.

As for comparisons, the style is difficult to compare. Try a bit of 'Muse', a bit of 'JJ72' and something melodic in the mix, and you still won't be anywhere near!

Regards

I've never been a fan of Muse, but having said that I've never gone out of my way to listen to anything by them other than what they have had in the UK charts.

Also, Radiohead have never really appealed to me. I remember listening to 'Street Spirit' and thinking about committing suicide when I was about 14.

'Creep' is my favourite song by Radiohead, by a long shot.
