masoleumrent
I've always said my favourite lyricists are Roger Waters/Morrissey/John Lennon, but i wanna post these lyrics from a song by the Jam, cos i just mentioned it whilst replying to another post and was just sat thinking how good the lyrics were....... GHOSTS - THE JAM Why are you frightened - can?t you see that it?s you That ain?t no ghost - it?s a reflection of you Why do you turn away - an? keep it out of sight Oh - don?t live up to your given roles There?s more inside you that you won?t show But you keep it hidden just like everyone You?re scared to show you care - it?ll make you vulnerable So you wear that ghost around you for disguise But there?s no need just ?cos it?s all we?ve known There?s more inside you that you haven?t shown So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat Just keep on walking down never ending streets One day you?ll walk right out of this life And then you?ll wonder why you didn?t try To spread some loving all around Old fashioned causes like that still stand Gotta rid this prejudice that ties you down How do you feel at the end of the day Just like you?ve waked over your own grave So why are you frightened - can?t you see that it?s you At the moment there?s nothing - so there?s nothing to lose Lift up your lonely heart and walk right on through
Aunt_Acid
Emerson Lake and Palmer had some really good lyrics. I'm not sure who wrote them, Greg Lake maybe? Also, I'd have to say the best set of lyrics ever written is the song Eclipse. You can't top it, no matter how hard you try.

Peppurr
I've always liked the lyrics to Time by Pink Floyd... Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way Tired of lying in the sunshine Staying home to watch the rain And you are young and life is long And there is time to kill today And then one day you find Ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run You missed the starting gun And you run, and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking Racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death Every year is getting shorter Never seem to find the time Plans that either come to nought Or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way The time is gone The song is over Thought I'd something more to say Home, home again I like to be here when I can When I come home cold and tired It's good to warm my bones beside the fire Far away across the field The tolling of the iron bell Calls the faithful to their knees To hear the softly spoken magic spells
bluesboy
Here's one from - The Doors The Crystal Ship Before you slip into unconsciousness I'd like to have another kiss Another flashing chance at bliss Another kiss, another kiss The days are bright and filled with pain Enclose me in your gentle rain The time you ran was too insane We'll meet again, we'll meet again Oh tell me where your freedom lies The streets are fields that never die Deliver me from reasons why You'd rather cry, I'd rather fly The crystal ship is being filled A thousand girls, a thousand thrills A million ways to spend your time When we get back, I'll drop a line

Karhul
Yes, you have all guessed it when you saw my name..... Stairway to Heaven. There's a lady who's sure, all that glitters is gold, And she's buying the stairway to heaven. When she gets there she knows, if the stores are all closed, With a word she can get what she came for. Ooh, ooh, and she's buying the stairway to heaven. There's a sign on the wall, but she wants to be sure, 'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. In a tree by the brook, there's a songbird who sings, Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it makes me wonder. There's a feeling I get, when I look, to the west, And my spirit is crying for leaving. In my thoughts I have seen, rings of smoke through the trees, And the voices of those who standing looking. Ooh, it makes me wonder, Ooh, it really makes me wonder. And it's whispered that soon, if we all call the tune, Then the piper will lead us to reason. And a new day will dawn, for those who stand long, And the forests will echo with laughter. If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now, It's just a spring clean for the May queen. Yes there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, There's still time to change the road you're on. And it makes me wonder. Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know, The piper's calling you to join him, Dear lady can you hear the wind blow, and did you know, Your stairway lies on the whispering wind... And as we wind on down the road, Our shadows taller than our soul, There walks a lady we all know, Who shines white light and wants to show, How everything still turns to gold, And if you listen very hard, The tune will come to you at last, When all are one and one is all, To be a rock, and not to roll.......... And she's buying the stairway, to, heaven...

katie_sane
I believe that in the movie the words used were "gobble gobble". The Ramones went to see 'Freaks' at an art-house cinema on a rare day off. This is where the inspiration for this song came from.

masoleumrent
yeah i always rate 'Time' certainly as floyd's best lyrics, i always like lyrics that give yer something to think about, or lyrics that sum up a certain feeling.....which 'Time' certainly does.....that bit, 'kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town, waiting for someone or something to show you the way' is definately one of the best lyrics written....'Eclipse' is a bit too simple for me, but they are effective lyrics....and a great way to finish a masterpiece. dalnet22
You can not leave out Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen when talking about best lyrics ever. I'll post Dylan a little later. I was going to use Thunder Road, but instead I'll go with Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway American dream At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines Sprung from cages out on highway 9, Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin' out over the line Baby this town rips the bones from your back It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap We gotta get out while we're young 'Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend I want to guard your dreams and visions Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims and strap your hands across my engines Together we could break this trap We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back Will you walk with me out on the wire 'Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider But I gotta find out how it feels I want to know if love is wild girl I want to know if love is real Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors And the boys try to look so hard The amusement park rises bold and stark Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight In an everlasting kiss The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive Everybody's out on the run tonight but there's no place left to hide Together Wendy we'll live with the sadness I'll love you with all the madness in my soul Someday girl I don't know when we're gonna get to that place Where we really want to go and we'll walk in the sun But till then tramps like us baby we were born to run --- Brilliant Disguise has great lyrics too. Such a 'brilliant' song ::
Batman
My votes go to "Stairway to Heaven" (which has been mentioned), "The End" by the Doors, and "Castles Made Of Sand" by Jimi Hendrix. This is the end Beautiful friend This is the end My only friend, the end Of our elaborate plans, the end Of everything that stands, the end No safety or surprise, the end I'll never look into your eyes...again Can you picture what will be So limitless and free Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand In a...desperate land Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain And all the children are insane All the children are insane Waiting for the summer rain, yeah There's danger on the edge of town Ride the King's highway, baby Weird scenes inside the gold mine Ride the highway west, baby Ride the snake, ride the snake To the lake, the ancient lake, baby The snake is long, seven miles Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold The west is the best The west is the best Get here, and we'll do the rest The blue bus is callin' us The blue bus is callin' us Driver, where you taken' us The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on He took a face from the ancient gallery And he walked on down the hall He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he Paid a visit to his brother, and then he He walked on down the hall, and And he came to a door...and he looked inside Father, yes son, I want to kill you Mother...I want to...f**k you C'mon baby, take a chance with us C'mon baby, take a chance with us C'mon baby, take a chance with us And meet me at the back of the blue bus Doin' a blue rock On a blue bus Doin' a blue rock C'mon, yeah Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill This is the end Beautiful friend This is the end My only friend, the end It hurts to set you free But you'll never follow me The end of laughter and soft lies The end of nights we tried to die This is the end
Batman
"Castles Made of Sand" has very underrated lyrics, I think: Down the street you can hear her scream "you're a disgrace" As she slams the door in his druken face And now he stands outside, And all the neighbors start to gossip and drool He cries "oh, girl you must be mad, What happened to the sweet love you and me had?" Agianst the door he leans and starts a scene And his tears fall and burn the garden green And so castles made of sand, Fall in the sea Eventually The little indian brave who before he was ten, Played war games in the woods with his indian friends And he built a dream that when he grew up He would be a feirce warrior indian chief Many moons past, and more the dream grew strong Until tomorrow he would sing his first war song And fight his battle, but something went wrong Suprise attack, killed him in his sleep that night And so castles made of sand, Melts into the sea Eventually here was a young girl who's heart was a frown 'Cause she was crippled for life and she couldn't speak a sound And she wished and prayed that she could stop livin' So she decided to die She drew her wheelchair to the edge of the shore And to her legs she smiled "You won't hurt me no more" And then a sight she seen made her jump and say "Hey look a golden winged ship is passin' my way" And it really didn't have to stop It just kept on goin' And so castles made of sand, Slips into the sea Eventually
katie_sane
All Along The Watchtower There must be some kind of way outta here said the joker to the thief There's too much confusion... I can't get no relief Business men they drink my wine Plowmen dig my earth No one will level on the line, Nobody of it is worth hey, hey No reason to get excited The thief he kindly spoke There are many here among us Who feel that life is but a joke But, uh...but you and I, we've been through that And this is not our fate So let us stop talkin' falsely now The hour's getting late, hey All along the watchtower Princes kept the view While all the women came and went Barefoot servants, too Outside in the cold distance A wildcat did growl Two riders were approaching And the wind began to howl Bob Dylan :guitar:
Foxy
"She" ~ Elvis Costello (I know he didn't write it originally) I live in hope, that one day someone will want to spend the rest of their life with me, and when they do, they will know me well enough to get down on one knee and serenade me with this truly beautiful song. "She may be the face I can't forget The trace of pleasure or regret May be my treasure or the price I have to pay She may be the song that summer sings May be the chill that autumn brings May be a hundred different things Within the measure of a day She may be the beauty or the beast May be the famine or the feast May turn each day into a heaven or a hell She may be the mirror of my dreams The smile reflected in a stream She may not be what she may seem Inside her shell She who always seems so happy in a crowd Whose eyes can be so private and so proud No-one's allowed to see them when they cry She may be the love that cannot hope to last Beckons indeed from shadows of the past That I'll remember 'til the day I die She may be the reason I survive The why and wherefore I'm alive The one I'll care for through the rough and ready years Me, I'll take her laughter and her tears And make them all my souvenirs For when she goes I've got to be The meaning of my life is she She... , oh she"

masoleumrent
and what are people's reasons for posting the best lyrics ever? - my favourite lyrics are things i can relate to - see my post 'ghosts' by the jam - its just a self explanatory description of life, and maybe feeling a touch insecure etc....and the way we shield ourselves at times...."one day you'll walk right out of this life and then you'll wonder why you didn't try" - cos i am - boneidle at the best of times! "kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town waiting for someone or something to show you the way" - that intense feeling of boredom waiting for summat to happen..... i love lyrics that you can relate to and say - "that could have easily been written for me"

Foxy
What a beautiful song, Foxy!!! My eyes teared up reading that last verse. Aww Jenny, it is SUCH a lovely song, full of string instruments and Elvis Costello sings it so magically. It's from the film "Notting Hill", although I know in some countries that he only sings the version at the end and the one at the beginning is by Charles Aznavour. marko90
I would have to say my opinon of best lyrics ever would have to go to Trapt they are amazing lyrically...imparticularly "Made Of Glass" its my favorite song right now... TITLE: Made of Glass ARTIST: Trapt [sPONSOR] I don't know anything at all and I'm somebody else It could take years to find you, it could years to find myself And I don't need to hear your answer I just need you to see That I think it's time to break down these walls that we throw Am I still breathing have I lost that feeling Am I made of glass 'cause you see right through me I don't know who I am and you're the only one who sees that I can't ask these questions that cannot be answered today And even if everything goes wrong and we start to fall apart I will understand where you are, I will understand this by myself And I don't need to hear your answer I just need you to feel Like there are no boundaries at all And how far have we come, too far to throw away the past Will you be there waiting for me I have to ask what we are, if I ask today it just won't last So I'll be here waiting for you Will we ever feel this good again - Not today Will we ever feel this real again - Not today Will you ever be mine again - Not today Will we ever feel this real again - Not today I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!! :guitar:
