MBrokos
Elliott is similar to the Beatles, Simon+Garfunkel, and Nick Drake. He's more contemporary, but his lyrics are equally cool and incidentally equally depressing. He plays mostly acoustic folk/punk/rock. An excellent singer, writer, guitar and piano player. Even when put up against his amazingly talented and influential influences, he's still my favorite artist.
Eggplant
I've heard of Elliott Smith. I loved his song "Miss Misery". I believe it was from the movie "Good Will Hunting"? It got a Grammy nom as well.
MBrokos
Yeah, the Goodwill Hunting soundtrack is a really good representation of his music. "Angeles" and "Between the Bars" are, I think, easily two of his best songs. And "miss misery" ain't nothin to sneeze at either.

Batman
He might be too famous for this forum section, but this guy was an amazing songwriter from Portland, Oregon, who plays mostly bittersweet acoustic guitar. He's often described as "folk-punk" but I have no idea why. He's one of the great songwriters of my generation, and will probably someday be considered as one of the great songwriters in contemporary music history. He has been compared to Nick Drake because he plays similar music, and to the Beatles because of his great melodies. Here's one of my favorite songs by him, it's called "Say Yes" http://youtube.com/watch?v=2fpfq3n8vE0 just listen to the song without watching the video, because the fast paced images kind of ruin the great song in my opinion. edna
I love this song!! I like his style and it´s the kind of music that has no specific place in time... could fit in any decade.
daslied
I love him very much. The version of "Because" at the beginning of "American Beauty" is fantastic.
Red Fish
Hehe, set to Cowboy Bebop. Cool. That was pretty good. Nice and simple, although I don't think there's much of the "punk" genre in there.
