Elliott Smith

Elliott is similar to the Beatles, Simon+Garfunkel, and Nick Drake. He's more contemporary, but his lyrics are equally cool and incidentally equally depressing. He plays mostly acoustic folk/punk/rock. An excellent singer, writer, guitar and piano player. Even when put up against his amazingly talented and influential influences, he's still my favorite artist.

"waltz no. 2"

First the mic then a half cigarette

singing Cathy's clown

that's the man she's married to now

that's the girl that he takes around town

she appears composed, so she is, I suppose

who can really tell

she shows no emotion at all

stares into space like a dead china doll

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

now she's done and they're calling someone

such a familiar name

I'm so glad that my memories remote

'cause I'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note

here it is the revenge to the tune

you're no good

you're no good, you're no good, you're no good

can't you tell that it's well understood

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

I'm here today and expected to stayon and on and on

I'm tired, I'm tired

looking out on the substitute scene

still going strong

XO, mom, it's ok, it's alright, nothing's wrong

tell Mr. Man with impossible plansto just leave me alone

in the place where I make no mistakes

in the place where I have what it takes

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

I'm never gonna know you now

but I'm gonna love you anyhow

He might be too famous for this forum section, but this guy was an amazing songwriter from Portland, Oregon, who plays mostly bittersweet acoustic guitar. He's often described as "folk-punk" but I have no idea why. He's one of the great songwriters of my generation, and will probably someday be considered as one of the great songwriters in contemporary music history. He has been compared to Nick Drake because he plays similar music, and to the Beatles because of his great melodies.

Here's one of my favorite songs by him, it's called "Say Yes"

just listen to the song without watching the video, because the fast paced images kind of ruin the great song in my opinion.
