Mike Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 I was recently thinking about the meaning of another favorite song of mine, I Had Too Much To Dream by the Electric Prunes - Last night your shadow fell upon my lonely room I touched your golden hair and tasted your perfume Your eyes were filled with love the way they used to be Your gentle hand reached out to comfort me Then came the dawn And you were gone You were gone, gone, gone I had too much to dream last night Too much to dream I'm not ready to face the light I had too much to dream Last night Last night The room was empty as I staggered from my bed I could not bear the image racing through my head You were so real that I could feel your eagerness And when you raised your lips for me to kiss Came the dawn And you were gone You were gone, gone, gone [repeat chorus 2X] Oh, too much to dream Oh, too much to dream Too much to dream last night Oh, too much to dream [repeat to fade] Anyway it got me to thinking about the other songs written about dreams, dreams; as in sleeping dreams, as well as dreams of achievements. Well it began to become clear that this would be a great discussion topic of some songs that deal with dreaming a bit more indirectly as well. Some songs have dream in the title such as some listed here dreams at Songfacts others, more discreetly in the lyrics, as this favorite Beatles song of mine I'm only sleeping. Well, what do you think about this dreamy topic? I hope I'm not putting you to sleep with all this. <yawn> I'm so tired/I haven't slept a wink/I'm so tired/my mind is on the blink.
Earth-Angel Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 Good topic Pink! I can think of lots of good songs about dreams and sleep. :sleepy: And that Beatles song you mentioned, I'm only sleeping, please don't hate me - but I love the Suggs version! :: But before I get slack for that... Here are some good dreamy sleepy songs: Running down a dream - Tom Petty It was a beautiful day, the sun beat down I had the radio on, I was drivin? The trees went by, me and del were singin? Little runaway, I was flyin? Yeah runnin? down a dream That never would come to me Workin? on a mystery, goin? wherever it leads I?m runnin? down a dream I felt so good, like anything was possible I hit cruise control and rubbed eyes The last three days the rain was unstoppabl e It was always cold, no sun shine Yeah runnin? down a dream That never would come to me Workin? on a mystery, goin? wherever it leads I?m runnin? down a dream I rolled on as the sky grew dark I put the pedal down to make some time There?s something good waitin? down this road I?m pickin? up whatever is mine Yeah runnin? down a dream That never would come to me Workin? on a mystery, goin? wherever it leads I?m runnin? down a dream And then there are all the fantastic covers of Sleepwalk. My favourite versions would have to be by Sleepwalkers and Joe Satriani. Such a gorgeous song, it doesn't need lyrics to make it so. And my favourite, well that has to be the cranberries version of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams Some songs with sleep or dream in the title I have on my PC are: Sweet dreams - Marilyn Manson Sweet dream - The Euryhtmics Sleeping Satellite - Tasmin Archer Sleepwalk - Sleepwalkers Sleepwalk - Joe Satriani Sweet dreams - Tori Amos I'm only sleeping - Suggs Dreams - Fleetwood Mack Dreams - The Cranberries Daysleeper - REM Suicidal dream - silverchair Requiem for a dream - movie theme And the best song to put you to sleep? Sweet Lullaby by Deep Forest :guitar:
MuzikTyme Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 I can think of many dream type songs but none IMO are as beautiful and as sleep inducing as Brahm's Lullaby sang beautifully by Aaron Neville: Lullaby, and good night In the sky stars are bright Close your eyes, start to yawn Pleasant dreams until the dawn Close your eyes now and rest Lay your head on my chest Go to sleep now and rest May your slumber be blessed. Certainly not to be considered as psychedelic as Too Much to Dream but nevertheless a timeless sleep song worth mentioning and a big thumbs up for Neville for sharing his wonderful voice to the young and old, as well as giving new life to Brahms' instrumental masterpiece.

johnnymahoe Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 It sounds like it's about drugs but it's about a dream Purple haze by jimi hendrix Purple Haze was in my brain, lately things don't seem the same, actin' funny but I don't know why 'scuse me while I kiss the sky. Purple Haze all around, don't know if I'm coming up or down. Am I happy or in misery? Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me. Purple Haze was in my eyes, don't know if it's day or night, you've got me blowing, blowing my mind is it tomorrow or just the end of time? Dreamer by Boston is another song that has the word dream in it.
RonJonSurfer Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 A few more...Spill The Wine - Eric Burdon and War, What a Day For a Daydream - The Lovin' Spoonful, Dreamboat Annie - Heart.
edna Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 It sounds like it's about drugs but it's about a dream Hi, Johnny, I always thought that Purple Haze was about an acid trip... it´s maybe because there was an LSD called "purple haze" , just like the "pink floyds" or "window panes" or so...Glad to learn more about this!

edna Posted December 28, 2004 Report Posted December 28, 2004 And what about Everly Bros, "Dream, dream, dream" (that´s the name of the song?) Or "I´m only sleeping", beatles. Or the Bob Dylan´s dreams...
Carl Posted December 29, 2004 Report Posted December 29, 2004 Check out "Dream" by Forest For The Trees. It's hard to find, but worth the effort. Here are the lyrics: We are all here in the act of creation Let's fly away on our imagination You take me to the highest heights and into the depths of the deepest abyss When I am dreaming, I don't know if I'm truly asleep or if I'm awake And when I get up, I don't know if I'm truly awake, or if I'm still dreaming Dream, Dream, Dream, Dream, life is but a dream Traveling the waves of an infinite ocean I feel the deepest emotion I see a shadow of reality Please hold me closely and take me away I'm the first person you're the second person Earlier today I was in the third person Stop cursing, start diversing Oedipus is bliss the sunshine will affect your mind Stretch it out, don't doubt the amount my brain is caught I'm just blessed Trip hoppin', so I flow like a stream It's just a dream
