Hey, is someone talking about Country music on Songfacts? I felt my ears ringing! :)

A couple of songs you might look into:

Butterfly Kisses - Bob Carlisle

Because You Love Me - Jo Dee Messina

Through the Years - Kenny Rogers

(The last two are not father/daughter specific but are still good songs.)

I might be stretching it on these two further suggestions:

Home by Alan Jackson (dedicated to his parents)

"Then They Do" by Trace Adkins

I'll post some more if I think of them.

Merry Christmas!

Hi Windy,

Some of these may need a stretch of the imagination for Father / Daughter,

maybe a more generalized interpretation,

and some are not country music,

but we're up against a deadline here. ::

Sunrise, Sunset - Matt Monro

Those Were the Days - Mary Hopkin

some Marty Robbins

Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers

Daddy's Little Girl - Al Martino

Take Me Back to Tulsa

Home - Karla Bonoff or Bonnie Raitt

Take Me Home, Country Roads - John Denver

Circle Game - Joni Mitchell

A Song for You - Leon Russell

You Are My Shining Star - the Manhattans

Unforgetable - Nat King Cole

The Shadow of Your Smile - Wes Montgomery

Thank you bluesy and all! PD I'll talk country anytime you want! I don't need these till Wed. My Dad and I had a kind of weird realtionship, and I just wanted to convey a message without having to say the words. He doesn't talk well, very quiet working man, not around much. If y'all think of more let me know. Just respect for parents type stuff.

This reminds me of my favourite Daddy song, Don't Cry Daddy, sung by Elvis Presley:

Today I stumbled from my bed

With thunder crashing in my head

And my pillow still wet

From last night's tears

And as I think of giving up

A voice inside my coffee-cup

Kept crying out

Ringing in my ears

Don't cry, Daddy

Daddy, please don't cry

Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy

Together we'll find a brand new mommy

Daddy, Daddy, please laugh again

Daddy ride us on your back again

Oh, Daddy, please don't cry

Why are children always first

To feel the pain and hurt the worst

It's true, but somehow

It just don't seem right

'Cause ev'ry time I cry I know

It hurts my little children so

And I wonder will it be the same tonight

Don't cry Daddy

Daddy, please don't cry

Daddy, you've still got me and little Tommy

Together we'll find a brand new mommy

Daddy, Daddy, please laugh again

Daddy ride us on your back again

Oh, Daddy, please don't cry

Oh, Daddy, please don't cry

Hi Carole. Here's a classic from the 50s - certainly not Country though. Ex Spice Girl Geri Halliwell has recently released her version of it.

My Heart Belongs To Daddy Originally performed by Marilyn Monroe

While tearing off a game of golf

I may make a play for the caddy

But when I do, I don't follow through

Cause my heart belongs to Daddy

If I invite a boy some night

To dine on my fine food and haddie

I just adore, his asking for more

But my heart belongs to Daddy

Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy

So I simply couldn't be bad

Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy

Da, Da, Da, Da, Da, Da, Da, Da, DAAAAD

So I want to warn you laddie

Though I know that you're perfectly swell

That my heart belongs to Daddy

Cause my Daddy, he treats it so well

While tearing off a game of golf

I may make a play for the caddy

But when I do, I don't follow through

Cause my heart belongs to Daddy

If I invite a boy some night

To cook up some hot enchilada

Though Spanish rice is all very nice

My heart belongs to Daddy

Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy

So I simply couldn't be bad

Yes, my heart belongs to Daddy

Da, Da, Da, Da, Da, Da, Da, Da, DAAAAD

So I want to warn you laddie

Though I know that you're perfectly swell

That my heart belongs to Daddy

Cause my Daddy, he treats it so well

............................................................

Also, As Jr said, Madonna's "Oh Father" would be at best sad, at worst insulting to your Father. I don't think I'd use it. DITTO "Cat's In The Cradle".

Wow. I'm surprised that this hasn't come up yet, but Daughters by John Mayer. All about the influence a father has on his daughter, and how she'll love men like him

"On behalf of every man, looking out for every girl, you are the God and the weight in her world"

It's an acoustic-y song. Excellent though. My mom loves it.

Hope this isn't too late, but a VERY good generic song (not just for daddy's) is Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. I did my father/daughter dance at our wedding to this and my fatehr is 100% country, but like this just the same. Another more generic, but awesome, nostalgia song is Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole...you've probably heard this already either on ER or on commercials for Toys 'r Us.com or Ivory soap...it's a very nice sounding tenor playing the uke and singing the classic tune. It makes me cry...

I just got this Email from Ralph Bravaco. I was a couple of decades out with the origin of the song. Come and join us if you're not already a member Ralph !

"I just read your comment on the song "My Heart Belongs to Daddy."

The song was actually written in 1938 by Cole Porter for his show "Leave It To Me."

The show starered William Gaxton, Victor Moore, and Sophie Tucker. However, it was new-comer Mary Martin who sang "Daddy" and stole the show."

I heard John Mayer(is that his name?)on the today show this morning doing a song about fathers be good to your daughters. Now I don't care for this guy much, I can't understand much of his lyrics. but the words were pretty good. anyone know it?

It might have been this one:

Daughters

I know a girl

She puts the color inside of my world

She's just like a maze

Where all the walls all continually change

I've done all I can

To stand on the steps with my heart in my hand

Now I'm starting to see

Maybe it's got nothing to do with me

Fathers be good to your daughters

Daughters will love like you do

Girls become lovers, who turn into mothers

So mothers be good to your daughters too

Oh you see that skin

It's the same shes been standing in

Since the day she was him walking away

Now she's left

Cleaning up the mess he made

So fathers be good to your daughters

Daughters will love like you do

Girls become lovers, who turn into mothers

So mothers be good to your daughters too

Boys you can break

You'll find out how much they can take

Boys will be strong

And boys soilder on

But boys would be gone without warmth for a womans good, good heart

On behalf of every man, looking out for every girl

You are the god, and you are the weight of the world

On behalf of every man, looking out for every girl

You are the god and the weight of the world

So fathers be good to your daughters

Daughters will love like you do

Girls become lovers, who turn into mothers

So mothers be good to your daughters to
