As far as songwriters go, I like to be told a story from the singers perspective. This is one of the reasons I love Buffett so much. So many tales from the road, the places he has been, the people he has met... Check this out...

Some folks say that I've got the perfect life

Three swell kids, lots of toys and a lovely wife

I fly, I sail, I throw caution to the wind

Drift like a stratus cloud above the Caribbean

But every now and then, the dragons come to call

Just when you least expect it, you'll be dodgin' cannonballs

I've seen too much not to stay in touch

With a world full of love and luck

I've got a big suspicion 'bout ammunition

I never forget to duck

(Chorus):

Come back, come back back to Jamaica

Don't you know, we made a big mistaica

We'd be so sad if you told us good-bye

And we promise not to shoot you out, of the sky

It was a beautiful day, the kind you want to toast

We were tree top flyin', movin' west along the coast

Then we landed in the water, just about my favorite thrill

When some a**hole started firing as we taxied to Negril

Just about to lose my temper as I endeavored to explain

We had only come for chicken we were not a ganja plane

Well, you should have seen their faces when they finally realized

We were not some coked up cowboy sporting guns and alibis

(Chorus)

Come back, come back back to Jamaica

Don't you know, we made a big mistaica

We'd be so sad if you told us good-bye

And we promise not to shoot you out, of the sky

They shot from the lighthouse, they shot from highway

They shot from the top of the cliff, they had all gone haywire

We're catchin' fire, and there wasn't even a spliff

Well, the word got out all over the island

Friends, strangers, they were all apologizin'

Some thought me crazy for bein' way too nice

But it's just, another shi**y day in, paradise

Come back, come back back to Jamaica

Don't you know, we made a big mistaica

We'd be so sad if you told us good-bye

And we promise not to shoot you out, of the sky

I give you -

Jon Anderson

I awoke this morning

Love laid me down by the river

Drifting I turned on up stream

Bound for my forgiver

In the giving of my eyes to see your face

Sound did silence me

Leaving no trace

I beg to leave, to hear your wonderous stories

Beg to hear your wonderous stories 'LA AHA'

He spoke of lands not far

Nor lands they were in his mind

Of fusion captured high

Where reason captured his time

In no time at all he took me to the gate

In haste I quickly

Checked the time

If I was late

I had to leave, to hear your wonderous stories

Had to hear your wonderous stories 'LA AHA, LA AHA'

Hearing

Hearing hearing your wonderous stories

Hearing your wonderous stories

It is no lie I see deeply into the future

Imagine everything

You're close

And were you there

To stand so cautiously at first

And then so high

As he spoke my spirit climbed into the sky

I bid it to return

To hear your wonderous stories

Return to hear your wonderous stories

Return to hear your wonderous stories

LA AH LA AH AH AH

Hearing

Hearing

Hearing

Hearing

Hearing

A favorite of mine is Jim Webb who wrote all Glen Campbell's early Hits. His songs are said to be drawn from his own life. "Galveston" (in Texas)tells the poignant story of a homesick U.S. soldier in Vietnam who dreams of being home with his sweetheart, while living with the continual reality of war . It's one of my all time Top Songs and reminds us of our loved ones and friends serving in the Armed Forces in foreign lands. Let's pray for them this Christmas.

............................................................

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'

I still see her dark eyes glowin'

She was 21 when I left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing

While I watch the cannons flashing

I clean my gun and dream of Galveston

I still see her standing by the water

Standing there lookin' out to sea

And is she waiting there for me?

On the beach where we used to run

Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying

Before I dry the tears she's crying

Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun

At Galveston, at Galveston

There so many good writers, but if I had to chose one it will be without the shadow of a doubt Bono. I mean, for me, U2 is a good band for their music etc... but what make them the biggest band in modern music histirory IMO is the powerful lyrics in their songs

Some example who come to my mind

"say it's true it's true we can breakthrough though torn in two we can be one"

"walk on by walk on through walk til you run and dont look back for here I am. walk on by walk on through so sad to beseige your love, stay tonight in a lie I'm only asking....But I....I think you know. Come on take me away take me home again"

"the city aflood our love turn to rust, we're beaten then blown by the winds, tremped in dust, I show you a place high on a desert plain where the streets have no name we're still building then burning down love"

"my hands are tied, my body bruised you've got me with nothing to win and nothing left to loose and you give yourself away"

"If you twist and turn away, if you tear yourself in two again, if I could yes I would if I could I would let it go. If you ask them maybe they tell you what I would say, true colors fly in blue and black bruised silken skies and burning flags, colors crash collide in bloodshot eyes..."

"Did I ask too much more than a lot, you gave me nothing and it's all I've got, we'r one but we'r not the same, well we hurt each other and we do it again you say love is a temple love the higher law you ask me to enter but then you make me crawl and I can't be holding on to what you've got when all you've got is hurt"

"you say you want your love to work out right, to last with me through the night, you say you want diamond on a ring of gold, your story to remain untold, your love not to grow cold.....when all I want is you"

And so on

Thanks Edna. Yes, we've always been fans of the Bee Gees. I'm getting a DVD of them in concert as one of my presents (Christmas morning 10.05 am here). We're having the "distribution of presents" in a few moments - a tradition in our Family where I play Santa and hand out our presents from under the Christmas Tree. Bit different now to when the kids were small - we wake them up instead of the other way round. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and 2005 is good to you! Love, Darryl
